There are sheep in wolves clothing and then there are wolves in sheep clothing. Most "racing" invitations are just a sign of respect. It has been my experience they know how much horse power you have, their only question is do you know how to use it. Just having 400+HP doesn't mean you can win the race, nor do you know what they have under the hood. Anyway, your smart for not street racing-no good can ever come from that behavior.
I respect the power that the Vette has and know the limitation of my skills or the lack of that's why if I ever did race, I would do it under a controlled environment. The problem is that most people do not know thier limitations.

true, true, true...
I once took an '80 Grand Prix and totally stripped the car and put in an '87 GN engine, trans, rear-end, turbo, intercooler, and then reprogrammed the chip. Those poor Vettes couldn't keep up with me on the streets.
There was no way for anyone to tell unless you laid down on your stomach and looked under the front end and saw the intercooler air scoop. It's fun building these kind of cars and whipping the sh^% out of a fast car.
And you wonder why I'm putting twin turbo's on the Vette when I get my tax return??? LOL!

I know exactly what you mean and yes many of them do know what power the Vette has, and that is what they want a free display of power of a car they can not beat nor own. You are doing the right thing, let them get their thrills someplace else.
I was on the tollway yesterday when a Ford Lightning started trying to get me to jump on it.
I politely waved him off, although he probably couldn't see me through the tinted windows. He punched it so I hear his exhaust as he sped off. I wasn't impressed.
I sure wanted to try out Chucks CoW tune I got a couple of weeks back, but I kept my composure.
the way I look at is theres always someone faster than you out there and never underestimate anyone lol. Before my vette I had a 9 sec evo that would pretty much rape anyone on the street and thats winter summer whatever cause of the all wheel drive and over 700 whp lol . I love and respect all cars cause you just never know whats been done to that car next to you lol.
I was at a signal a few weeks back, and a guy and his girl were in a Mustang GT, revving his engine and looking over at me. He was so busy trying to get me to "go" that he didn't see the motorcycle cop on the side street. I opened the NPP (love my M2W!), and rev'ed it, then closed the NPP. When the signal changed, he floored it, while I cruised off leasurely. Cop came up behind me, then ripped around me and nailed him well ahead of me. Laughed my oko'le off!
I don't suggest you find out on the street but you might be surprised...there are some very fast little whatever's driving around. Never overestimate your car or underestimate the competition...IMO that's a sure fire recipe for humiliation.
exactly.... It could be that the person just wanted to see/hear the vette move (nothing wrong with a little; safe show), or more then likely, they have something they want to show YOU under the hood.
This may be unknown to Corvette owners, but for the most part you guys are the benchmark (well you and 03-04 Cobras)... Often times people will compare power based on performance against these cars (IE I lost by a car to a C6 on a highway pull, or I pulled two cars)..
Another point would be, most people who "tune" or modify cars know a whole lot about other cars on the road. They'll know a LS1,LS2,LS3, etc.. But that vette owner may not know about a 4G63.
I dont see anything wrong with a 10-15mph burst on a open highway, thats probably a second or two of throttle, and just enough to make his day with a LS2-3 song.

You are correct, Sir.

Most of the cars that want to race here in Chicago are the Fast and Furious type's. The one's with the tiny little Asian cars that are suicide machines. The children spend a lot of money to get the cars faster. They even place spoilers on the car that are as big as the car. It makes for a good laugh.
But, I would bet many children that watch the Fast and Furious movies have been seriously hurt and even killed. It may get worse when the new movie comes out this year.
To answer the OP's question I think the children have no clue how fast a Corvette is. Remember the cars they drive are like go carts. They are small, fast, and handle well. One of these kid's behind the wheel of a Vette would surely spell disaster. I found when approached by one of the kids I look at the car, which are always funny looking and ugly, then laugh.
I've seen some awesome WRX/STi's, EVO's and SRT-4's that would really make some vette owners very, very sad. You can laugh at them all you want, but spanked is spanked.
The point is, of course, is you never know what someone has got under the hood and why would you risk everything you and your family has just to find out?
I cant count the times ive had to grit my teeth to keep from giving in to those clowns, its hard to do sometimes. Everyone wants to see what your car will do. I know what my car will do and i am not about to give them there thrill of the day. Most of them are mustang GTs.
I have gotten use to the bozos that always want to race when the see the Vette but do they really know how much power the Vette really has? My guess is they have no freaking clue. This week I had some 3xxi taunting me to race, which I had no intention to do but I believe this idiot had no clue on what a Vette could do. It's hard not to show them sometimes.
but there are some very quick modified "sleepers" out there that know exactly what the vette is capable of...
I get a chuckle out of the people that feel they need to show off their cars by racing past me looking for a reaction or a race... I just smile and keep my cool... most of the time...

They may be fast. Two things are for certain. One is they are butt ugly. The other they are funny looking. And most likely it is a child behind the wheel.
Again, my favorite is the spoiler as big as the car. I love that one.
And in 100 millions years a WRX, EVO, or even a TIVO would never, ever made me sad.
Got beat yesterday by a mini-van.Light changed, woman and kids laughing at me at next light......Oh well.guess it made her day. I sure did'nt to prove nothing.

Yes, IMHO, seems to me that most others that dart around or try to race or get near the Vette seem to want to be part of your world as a Vette owner. Granted you will get the odd nut case wierd driver once in awhile that has a need to compete.
Funny part is (as has previously been stated), Vettes are not designed to be light to light drag cars. They are not really designed to race a tight track where an Evo has the advantage (I know, a very good driver can keep up ). Vettes are designed for long road/track courses, nice straightaways to use the power, longer curves, etc. If you check out www.corvetteracing.com you will see the 1,2 and 3 place finishes by the Vette. And it has dominated in the long races.
But....all that said....since most of us only have a road, just be wise...no good getting yourself or someone else in trouble trying to show off. It's always nice to know that whether the other guy can beat you or not, he has respect for your car.
ive been on the import side of this equation as well (stealths and 3000gts). i dont care if a neon or a cobalt or a civic or w/e else out there is faster than my car. It sounds cliche and its so beat but at the end of the day, a neon is a neon no matter how fast it is. I couldnt respect myself driving it.
I know what you mean, I had a Mustange GT badger me for several miles and we came to a stoplight, and I forgot my age when the light cahnged and TOTALLY blew that GT away. If felt so good.
a neon is a neon no matter how fast it is. I couldnt respect myself driving it.
If you can't respect yourself because of what you drive, you've got some other issues you may need to tend to. Wonder if the millions of people who drive Neon's and the like can respect themselves.
