Caught a rock last weekend and put a 3 inch spider web right in the drivers line of vision. Is glass replacement just glass replacement or is there something special I need to look for? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having my windshield replaced this morning for the same reason ( I got lucky - the rock caught the windshield dead-nuts center right at the rear view mirror mounting point. Had a 3"crack that is now 5". Hence not waiting (was going to wait a few more weeks in order to thin out the rock inventory on the streets)
Aside from the HUD question, insist on a genuine GM one and not some aftermarket POS. Also, it is not a job for just any glass place - do your due diligence to make sure the place is familiar with Vettes
I always respond to the windshield replacement questions with this additional caution: be sure the rear view mirror is removed correctly or it will not reinstall without being loose/wobbly. It is attached with a bayonet-type system and if the installer just pries it off the retaining pins get bent and the mirror will not be tight. Check the forum archives for previous information on this. I know from experience it is a problem-the glass company ended up buying me a mirror! (I also had a non-HUD windshield brought out the first time, so I know about that issue also)
Thanks for all of the useful info. I actually called the dealer that I got my car from and got a recommendation. This guy does all of their glass work and they move a lot of Vettes (Bachman Auto Group in Louisville). Actually gave me the guy's name to ask for specifically. I was encouraged when he told me he would need it for the entire day.
I forwarded all the forum lessons learned I can find especially noted was the loose mirror issue and he seemed to know exactly what I was referring to. Again, encouraged. And yes, $1,575, so I will pay the $100 deductible on this one.
Supposed to be done this week sometime. I'll let you know how it went.
Thanks again!

Got the replacement today. Bummer I had to drive in the rain, but couldn't be helped. Ryan's Auto Glass in Louisville, did a great job. Everything was seated properly and no shakey mirrors. Took him about 3 hours and cost my insurance company $1,142 plus my $100 deductible. Man, and I thought the tires were expensive :-)

I disagree with this statement. Many here have reported that the aftermarket windshields actually held up better. I had mine replaced last year and since then have taken several rocks to the windshield with no chips.

I have HUD and Onstar and my replacement only cost my insurance company $666 and change. Keep in mind this was in Alaska where everything is at least 20-30 percent higher. After the install I verified they did install the correct windshield. You guys paying a 1K and more are getting ripped and don't even know it. BTW - Safelite did my replacement and my insurance was Geico.
