When the V1 first came out in the early 90s it was sufficiently shielded to avoid detection by the equipment then in use.
Since then, the electronic one upmanship has continued and the units used to detect radar detectors can easily detect the V1. Of course that's moot in 49 states, but if you live in Virginia, DC or parts of Canada you'll have to settle for a Beltronics STi and lose the V1 arrows feature and some sensitivity. The Beltronics unit is presently undetectable and as far as I know it's the only radar detector that is.
I got caught as well a few years ago in Va. I had an Escort solo threw it in the glove box but did not turn it off and they got me with their RDD. The LEO took the detector and recorded the serial number from it and gave it back to me. I mailed in the fine around $100.00 and that was that!
Having played the Electronic Warfare game on a much higher level, I believe that those of us that try to play it in our cars, and speed, are going to get a ticket(s) sooner or later.

I work in the EW game at the higher level also.
The only fail safe option is to turn the thing off and not speed. Why no one suggests that is beyond me.
WTF, it's illegal to use a radar detector in VA? That's BS (IMHO). I thought they were legal everywhere
It's illegal in Va and D.C.I got a ticket in Va a couple of years ago for a detector on 95 southbound just before you exited the state. The cop said it would be about $40 but it was well over $100 with the court costs added on.
A LEO can do that in VA and DC because the use is illegal and it would be 'evidence'. In other states, like NC, the LEO could NOT search because the use or possession of a radar detector is NOT illegal....
If you get pulled over, just swallow the evidence and retrieve it later.
