OK, it looks like $102 for unlawful use of a radar detection or jamming device. Seems like you would be much better off spitting in public, since that fine is only $87!
Just did a little internet search and unless it just happened, they are not illegal in CA. But in Minnesota and California (illegal to hang anything from the windshield with suction cups; however both dashboard and visor mounting is allowed.)
Radar detectors are legal in CALIF if they do not block your vision to the road. Arguably hanging it from the mirror is illegal. As is a hanging a pair of fuzzy dice. I just bought a V1 and it is going on visor mount.
Good luck next time just take it down before the leo gets to your window.
When I drive through Virginia I put my V1 on the floor or console so it’s not seen. It works pretty well that way except for LAZER of course!
Be careful some times the tax agent will come up behind you and hit your car with "Instant ON" even if you’re not speeding. You jam on your brakes and he knows/suspects your running a detector!
I agree with the posts above that indicate radar detectors are illegal in VA and DC as well as Canada, but are legal in other jurisdictions. This information changes occasionally, though, and I haven't checked recently.
To the OP -- I would be interested to know what radar detector you were using. If I remember correctly, the V1 is supposed to have no emissions that would set off an LEO "radar detector detector". Of course, they can always walk up and see it on the dash if one is unwary.

V1 leaks. Pretty bad, too. It can be "seen" w/ an RDD

Nope that's incorrect. There's no law against radar detectors in California....of course given the control freak nature of our current legislature I wouldn't be surprised to see that change.
