If made correctly I suspect you could have the Vette stolen and returned from police impound and still find your valuables in there.
I'm trying to come up with some way to lift it up that won't give it away. Maybe just a loose flap on the carpet at the side with a finger hole in the plywood.

Excellent idea !
About lifting the false bottom, how about a bent piece of wire, bent like an L. That way you can slide it down one side, turn it, and lift the false bottom.
How is it "secret" or more hidden simply because something is on top of something else? If a thief opens the compartment chances are he will take everything out.
I'll save you some time if your building one. The left compartment is 13 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inch with a 3 1/4 by 1 inch notch out on the outboard rear corner. 1/4 inch plywood or even particle board will work fine.
I covered mine with gray ribbed foam packaging but 1/4 flat foam or carpet would work fine.
I drilled a 3/4 inch hole and slit the foam above the hole for a finger hole to pull it out. It fits fairly tight.
I put 3 inch screws in for legs, I would use 4 inch if you can find them that long. I put the little suction cup things on just to finish out the end ot the screw.
With 3 inch legs a lot of stuff will fit in this area. Your wallet, a digital camera, even a Colt.
I didn't check the right side it may be different dimensions.

They do this on the border all the time, IT IS NOT A SECRET, just go to the border and see how they find them. Can't hide from the Xrays, etc.
Around here your average car vandal is armed with a rock, tire iron and maybe a screw driver. Use of potable XRAY units and trained dogs have not gotten to be std gear yet.
Looks great Larry !!!. Now all you have to do is put something really cheap laying on top so if you are burglarized they will find something and be satisfied!!!
[QUOTE=lander;1569794720]The OP is saying to make the false bottom in such a way that it is a snug fit and appears to be the bottom of the cubby. Bingo!
C4s had a tray that could be removed to gain access to the deeper well behind each seat. It was a great stashin' spot
The carpet mod in the pic, is very obvious, as the texture does not match at all... If I had something to hide, it would be i the other secret compartment on a C6

I didn't have any matching carpet for the project so I used some gray packing foam. As I indicated the flash photo of the bottom in place highlighted the difference, but in normal lighting especially at night even the foam is undetectable. The gray packing foam I used was ribbed, flat would also work, and the gray foam blends pretty well in the compartment.

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
