C6 Navigation Update Help?

Man!!
Purchased C6 in Mar 2006 It came with 2 free Nav Updates. Waited till Mar 2007 and never received anything about an update. SOOoo I go to their web site and try e-mail but end up giving them a call. They advise me that there is a major update coming out around Aug of 07. No problem I'll wait. Aug rolls around and a disc arrives.
Now I just remembered I never received any new information on an update. Car is registered and I'm wondering why no post card telling me I can get a new update. Gave them a call today! SORRY that program was canceled in Dec 08. Got no card in the mail or e-mail TOO BAD it is my responsibilty to contact them. Registering with them and signing up for updates don't count.
They will gladly sell me a copy for $199.

Why would anyone charge for an older version of the navigator disc? Hell when you update, the old disc is a relic, why not charge for postage and be done with it? $5 or so and call it a day?
Torrent has copies of V 5.0 for free (I think).

Here's possibly a stupid question. I need to get an updated NAV disc, too, since the area I live in has grown an it looks like I'm riving off road through sections of town. No problem, I cna get the disc one way or the other :o
How do I update the head unit to play MP3 discs? I tried it with the file offered in the FAQ link but no dice. any suggestions?

It really is a pretty easy exercise to do yourself.
