Default Performance Pads Grinding

I just installed Hawk Performance Pads and new drilled/slotted rotors. I went through the bedding procedure but the brakes are still making a grinding noise. I checked and everything seemed to still be in it's proper place. I've only driven them 40 - 50 miles. How long before I should expect that the noise will go away? Thoughts anyone?

I'll assume the pads and rotors are installed correctly. Did the rotors have any coating on them? From Zeckhausen..."...rotors with zinc or cadmium plating, or if the rotors have an anti-corrosion phosphate coating, you should postpone the bedding process until normal driving has allowed your brake pads to polish the rotors clean and removed all traces of the plating or coating."

If you're good to go for higher speed bedding I'd try re-bedding the pads....sometimes it can take multiple times. I'd think after the initial bedding procedure you could start to really lay into the brakes from higher speeds...60 even up to 80 mph.

Here's a good link for bedding brakes:

http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

If the grinding was more of a 'judder' (vibration) type noise I might think the rotors were bad but in-as-much as they're new I would doubt that. Good luck!

I'm not sure what the problem is but properly installed brakes and pads should not "grind" under any condition.

Your "grinding" desdcription gives me cold chills!

Could it possible that you have one (or more) of the pads installed backward? If so, you are eating up one (or more) of your rotors by having the metal backing of the pad against the rotor instead of the friction material against the rotor.

If your "grinding" sound is relatively loud, this is probably the cause.

Don't go to bed tonight until you check it out (and post your finds back to the Forum).

Thanks to all.

The pads are, fortunately, installed in the correct manner. My son-in-law and I checked as we were installing them. I also checked the rotors to see if the there was any sign of grooving or abrasion. The folks at West Coast Corvette said "That is the nature of those pads. As they heat up is should get a little better. When it comes to performance these are much better but they are a little noisier."

Specifically, the pads are Hawk HP Street Pads and the rotors are AC Delco Slotted and Drilled.

The only coating on the rotors was an oily substance (probably for shipping) that burned off pretty quickly during the bedding process. In fact, they were smoking a lot. Scary stuff!

Thanks for the update... earlier today, I was wondering if you had solved the mystery.

Drive safely!
