Car has never had an issue before. I went to park the car this afternoon, and the computer wouldn't recognize the trans was in reverse (its a 2005) I kept trying, but it kept giving the message "shift to reverse"
Finally I disconnected the battery to prevent drain as it wouldn't shut down. Came back about 30 minutes later and reconnected the battery. Now the car displays "service column lock" and will not start. My first thought was a bad battery, but it tested out at 12.4 volts. Every thing else seems to work, although the car still will not shut off.
Any ideas? The battery is less than a year old and didn't have any problems cranking earlier, but I guess it could be defective. Most of the other posts I have read on the subject are somehow linked to low battery voltage.
Sounds like the battery. The voltage test is best done with a volt meter across the battery and try to start it. If it drops below 9.5 volts it's bad or at least needs a charge. I have read on this forum that somewhere in the 11 volt range is not good. 9.5 volts is from older auto's and my be too low for the c6.

The 'shift to reverse' message despite proper shutdown in reverse, can mean that DBS is currently pending. That message usually goes away with a shift back to reverse for a few seconds. If not, then the actual switch may be bad, or like already stated a dying battery. Has the car received the BCM reflash to eliminate DBS?
FYI......A fully charged battery should measure 13.2 volts. Each cell in the battery produces 2.2 volts and there are 6 of them. Kind of strange we refer to them as 12v batteries......
To get an accurate battery reading you should disconnect it before measuring it since the car uses some voltage just to keep things alive.

I had the same problem with my 2005, C6, M6. The Steering Column Lock failed. I had to wait about an hour to an hour and half before it would start. Took it to the dealer and they identified the problem code. They replaced the column lock and it has work with no problems for the past 2 years.
Update: The service column lock message has dissapeared. Other problems remain, still not recognizing the car is in reverse, won't shut down on its own, won't start. Everything else still working properly. I'll probably try a new battery tomorrow, and after that start troubleshooting.
Well, I guess Dad's are not always right. Mine told me that yrs ago when I was just a small fry. But you're 100% correct after I googled it. (And my pop was an electrical engineer!!)
Thanks for the correction..... from wiki-pedia ...."6 cells at 2.1 volts for a total of 12.6"

I get the 'Service Column Lock' (CL) also, but no codes are stores(according to Dealer). I have to disconnect/reconnect battery to start. I don't always get the SCL display when it will not start. Pretty embarrassing, especially at car shows. Maybe I should change paint from Precision Red to Lemon Yellow.
