Flat bed is a must for the vette. The one time that I called for a jump start, they came with a hand held jump starter that the fellow said he knew would not start a vette. He even told me that he told his boss before he came that it would not start a vette. Sure enough, it would not start my vette. I had to put the battery charger on it and wait the several hours before I got it started. AAA is good for running out of gas or towing, but as far as a jump start, it was a no go for me.
AAA is great The clutch went bad in my 68/427 on my way to a car show last month.Called AAA requested a flatbed and within 20 minutes he showed up. He treated my 68 with kid gloves using pieces of wood to fill the gaps between the flatbed and the ground. Not only that the AAA flatbed driver called me and let me know the Vette was dropped of at the shop. I found out from the shop owner that the flatbed driver waited 10 minutes for the shop to open than took the Vette off the truck. He told the owner he saw from the shop hours sign that they opened in 10 minutes and waited because he didn't want to leave the car outside in the parking lot.
I think insurance only covers tows if it happens after an accident not a breakdown. Besides I like to deal with my insurance company as least as possible.
I keep OnStar for my wife's piece of mind, otherwise it would be dumped. I don't need a monthly reminder to tell me my TPMS reads 10% low.
I have AAA also and they are good. Of course you must be within phone range. Since flat tires are the most common things to park a car that is where runflats shine. Besides a major failure you can make it to phone range.
I called AAA yesterday after I found GM roadside would only flatbed to the nearest chevy dealer. I guess I have the basic AAA because they would only tow 5 miles free and then $3 per mile after that. However, my daughter is on my plan and she has used AAA three times over the past three years for dead battery at no charge.
I've had AAA since 1988. Whenever I needed a flatbed, I simply told them and it was never a problem. In Detroit, the towing companies are on contract with AAA and are not AAA owned. Every tow that I've had was with knowledgeable drivers and took care of me very well.
For the Vette, FLATBED - no other option. Wood planks - REQUIRED.
This is an interesting thread. I've had AAA off and on for 49 years. I always have towing insurance on my auto policy. Plus, whenever I have a vehicle more than 4 years old, I also have AAA. It's paid for itself many times over, mainly for "jumps". In all these years, I've ALWAYS had a local tow shop do the work, that's who AAA calls. Yes, they are always quite careful with whatever task is at hand, and helpful when things don't go as planned....but they are not owned by AAA....they are local towing firms that, I would guess, bid for the business.
If you need a tow, when you call AAA, be sure to request a flat bed. Tell them that you have a Corvette and that you request a flat bed. They will accommodate you.

A member must be present when the vehicle is delivered to a closed repair facility. Towing beyond the benefits described above is at the member's expense and may be subject to a delay.
I only had one vehicle towed in my 25 years of driving. That was due to a blowout (non Corvette, non runflat of course). I couldn't remove the wheel with the lug wrench I had. It took the garage about 15-20 minutes to remove it with air tools.
