I have been looking for a new sports car for several months. Now that it appears the used car market is making a small upward rebound I figured it's time to pull the trigger.
Anyway, I watched pass time last night and saw the 2008 auto Vett run 12.35 and said I need to go drive one of these. So off I went as I knew of a 2008 Black auto for sale I'm not sure but I think it is the LT3 package with heads up crome wheels and heated seats (no Z51) with 6,800 miles for 38,950.00.
I like this dealer as they let you take car by yourself. I went on about a 10 mile ride and hammered it pretty good several times. This car is fast and I mean fast, but this is were it gets crazy I didn't find the car very engaging to drive, just didn't stir the juices.
During my car hunt I have driven 2 Z06s, 3 Roush supercharged Mustangs, previous model BMW M3, 2 Shelby GT 500, Honda 2008 S2000 CR, Lotus Elise, Boxter, and BMW M coupe Saleen, 550HP 2004 Z06 and 588hp Cobra Mustang. So I have been around.
Right after I drove the Vett I went to a local Ford dealer and drove a GT 500 and a Roush 427 again.
The GT 500 felt plush and soft but a little more engaging than the Vett on the fun meter. Then I got directly into the Roush 427 not as fast as GT 500 in drag race and not even close to the Vett. However, it was a louder, raw and a tighter car which I found funner to drive.
I left the Ford dealer thinking I should by the Roush. How can this be?
Do you all think I should drive a 6 speed as I always wanted a Vett.
Performace wise I've always felt the Vett dollar for dollar was the best of anything going. Now I'm totaly confused.
"...but this is were it gets crazy I didn't find the car very engaging to drive, just didn't stir the juices."
You may not be a Corvette person...don't feel bad.
I remember hearing the same thing a few years ago from those who talked themselves into a used C5 Z06 instead of a new C6. They thought the "raw" C5 was more fun than the smooth, elegant, and faster C6. Of course the real story was they couldn't afford the better car.
All thanks for the replies.
I already have a Panoz AiV which has been my weekend toy for 8 years and it's about as loud & raw as it gets
I'm not sure but it might be since it's an auto. I'm going to drive a 6 speed tomorrow and check it out.
Would the Z51 package make difference?
Thanks TJ

It sounds like you're running out of cars to test drive. If the Corvette doesn't do it for you...buy something else. Buy the Mustang if it's what you prefer. I've never been a big fan of Mustangs but I don't dislike them...they just don't do anything for me. The most enjoyment I get from a Mustang is going around the Saleen's and Roush Mustangs on the race course. To each their own...buy the car you like best!
Definitely try the 6-speed manual and let us know if that changes your mind.
If you still feel the same then, like others have said - maybe a Corvette isn't for you. Nothing wrong with that, get the Mustang and enjoy!
I owned (purchased new) a '69 Mach I and to this day, it was one of the "funnest" cars I have ever owned. So in 2003 or so, I found myself wanting to get something with some grunt and fun to drive. I waited for month after month, season after season, to get my hands on a GT500 which, at that time, kept getting postponed in production. I finally got tired of waiting, and took a Viper for a test drive. I found brute force, but rather uncomfortable to drive, and not light on its' feet. I took out a Charger Daytona and was utterly unimpressed--to lumbering, and the profuse look of plastic inside was a turnoff. I then took out a Z51 coupe and pushed it hard. I bought it. Aside from being a whale of a bargain, it titillated my senses in every sense of the word. Now, as I look back, I am thoroughly convinced that despite my love of the pony, the Vette is clearly in a different league. But like everything in life, you have to see yourself in it and feel a part of the car that you drive. The choice is yours, but I'm happy with the choice I made and have absolutely no second thoughts or regrets. Best of luck in your quest.
