Problem is they don’t just confiscate the drug dealers stuff. They take whatever the drug dealer and his drugs were IN---whether the owner had knowledge of the drugs or not. This includes boats, planes, and cars owned by legitimate business. 60 Minutes did a story some years back about this. They focused on an legitimate air charter service, where the agency waited to bust the dealer on the plane, likely so they could nab the plane too. There was also a guy who picked up a female hitchhiker, then got sniffed out at a resturant...when he parked NEXT to an off duty K9 police unit at lunch…lost his caddy.

I think seizures like the charter airplane issue is what triggers the moral implications.

Sure...grab the bad guys stuff. Lets hope the vette owner didn't give someone a ride home from the grocery store.

This is the kind of thing they do in China and Russia.

America is better then that.

If however you want to sneak up on people to increase revenue than unmarked cars are best! You figure it out for yourself....

We have some unmarked Chargers in Connecticut and it was a total waste of money IMO! What is the value of car that you can't even transport someone taken into custody? You have to tie up another officer to even bring someone in! Not good police procedure at all. There are situations where a real unmarked car (like a vette) is required but it sure isn't out on traffic control duty. When I'm on duty I WANT people to see my well MARKED cruiser!

That's what protect and serve is all about to this LEO....
Well said, I couldn't agree more.

My problem with the issue is that citizens feel they need to make those decisions of whether or not the car should be used for enforcement. Are their tax dollars used for such issues, of course. However, a taxpayer with no law enforcement experience has no business making decisions about how to enforce the law. Many members on here like to throw out statistics and opinions, but have never walked a single step in an officer's shoes, let alone walked a shift in our shoes.
As I respect yours!! My issue is that unmarked cars generally "scare" the bejesus out of people. We've had several nasty incidents of people running from unmarked cars because of all the loons out masquerading as police officers! I've told my wife DO NOT stop for an unmarked vehicle unless it's in a public area, with people around and well lighted if at night! Let the officer follow her WITHOUT her breaking any traffic laws! She was also told to IMMEDIATELY place a call to me or my troops dispatcher and tell them the situation!

We have LOTS of very crazy people out there today.. more so than ever before. The only real protection a female has when being stopped is to insure it's a legitimate LEO! That's why I say unmarked cars for TRAFFIC CONTROL should be banned IMO. It's not a necessary tool with all the electronics we have available to use now. I personally do not want people to FEAR the police because we're supposed to be serving them, not intimidating them. My entire family has been in law enforcement starting with my grandfather who was chief of police in a rather large city.

I believe law enforcement is one of the most rewarding and honorable professions a young person can take up.... I sincerely hope we can get high caliber people to serve all the time. That will only happen if we're paid competetively and officers are held to the highest standards... Sorry for getting a bit off topic!!

Total BS that they can use confiscated cars. Here in Chicago they take your car if you play your music too loud. This is something that makes me so pissed off. Total abuse of power.

This story made ABC's World News Tonight... Their major concerns were the high cost of maintenance like $1500 for tires.

I guess that is the opposite of the old pickup they use in Box Elder County, UT. You won't run away from that also due to the radio and lack of roads.

Yes, and the abuse of forfeiture is predicated by not by the "Socialist Left" but by the "Law and Order Right" on the SCOTUS.

By us I've seen a sign on a small town-run recycling center that has a sign stating "residents only, all other users will have their car confiscated".

There is something perverted about misusing the "fruits of a poisonous tree" doctrine to steal a twenty thousand dollar car over a hundred dollar dumping crime. As absurd as confiscating the cars of johns that solicit prostitutes. Tyranny pretty accurately describes this.

Nevertheless, machismo shows with cops and toy cars like this give LEO's a bad image. And in a profession where every mistake a hard working cop makes is scruitinized in the media and public eye, cops need all the good PR they can get.

Raffle the damn thing off for DARE program money or something.

I would be appalled If my corvette got turned into something like that. I would cry. My $100,000 car turned into a cop car? WTF!

Pretty good reading, one of the more entertaining threads. Me, I see no need for the Poilice to be using a Z06, but I am sure they will get their thrills in it, as it certainly is not needed for day to day law enforcement.
