I'm curious as to how it mounts over the alternator?

Thanks for asking. It is a fairly easy install.
Below are the installation instructions.

Start by simply placing your new cover over the stock alternator and into the engine cavity just behind the power steering reservoir; at this cavity your new cover should rest just above the two metal lines there. Once in position manipulate the new cover so that it sits squarely on the alternator bracket and forward enough so that the two holes line up top dead center of this bracket and mark the holes with a fine point marker. Once you are satisfied with the location and have marked the position remove the new cover completely. Using a center punch accurately drill into the soft aluminum bracket using a 9/64th drill bit about ½” down. NOTE: This in no way will threaten the integrity of the stock bracket. Once the 2 holes have been accurately drilled you can now begin the final installation. Partially remove the protective liner from the long tongue, just past the mounting holes and reposition atop the alternator bracket, visually line up the holes. Place one of the small sheet metal screws (provided) thru one of the clear white button cover sockets (provided). Install the screw being careful not to over tighten! A HELPFUL TIP! Once one of the screws has been installed re-pilot the remaining hole (this will insure that the last screw goes in nice and straight) blow off any shavings and install the last screw.
Snap on the 2 chrome screw covers (provided). Be sure they SNAP in place. Remove the protective liner.

Can anyone suggest an alternative alternator housing without the bling or restrict the cooling? It is good for some but for others there is an alternative who do not wish to cover up their alternator...say that three times fast while on the Scotch

The only thing you can do is replace it with a chrome alternator if anyone sells one. But I bet it will be big $.

Does it add heat? will this reduce the life of the alternator?

No. It only covers the top.

For what it's worth, I priced a chrome alternator at Carlisle and the cheapest model was $400 and they wanted my stock alternator.

I have added quite few stainless covers on my C6 but balanced them with painted JSB parts. Yes, it does retain some heat under the hood but I've not experienced any overheating. I am adding a new SS plenum cover that will be etched with our club's logo. The last part that I want is the SS power steering/throttle body cover. Maybe it is too much bling for some but I like the look.

I did that; got the chrome bracket, too. It was easy to install the alternator; I have not done the bracket yet as it is a lot more involved.(which means I'll have to remove & reinstall the alternator a 2nd time.

I originally had a polished stainless steel alternator cover; I liked it a lot. That was before the supercharger was added and the extra pulley wheel added to the alternator bracket got in the way.

As mentioned by some the chrome alternator may look nicer but you are talking big bucks and not just for the alternator. Without the chrome bracket (around $365) it just doesn't look right. The alternator is an easy swap. Did that on my C5. The chrome alternator, not so easy a swap.

For some reason, I can't get the drill bit to penetrate into the alternator. Obviously I have to drill it on the top of the bracket but no luck? Thanks
Jay
