Default Temp.LS3

I searched for threads on this, but could not find them, anyway what is a good coolant temp.that a C6-LS3 should run at ?.I had my car tuned & the tuner turned my fan speed to the max speed, which makes a lot of noise & it sucks in a lot of Dirt into the engine area.At this time around town it runs around 210%,I'M going to take it back & have him turn the fan speed down some before the motor burns up.What else can i do ?...Thanks

Fan speed percentage change needs to be accompanied with a cooler thermostat, ie 160 or 180. If the tuner is commanding the fans on at 192 or even 196 with a stock thermostat they are going to run pretty much all the time, especially around town..

Stock C6 2007 Fan:
...........RPM:..192.196.199.203.204.210 214.219.221.225
Fan Desired:......0....0...15..23...31..39.. .47...56..74..89.9

210F seems to be the normal temp for my '08 and I have not noticed any problems. My previous inquiry on this brought back advice that this is a normal temp for a stock engine and the engines are intended to run hotter for better efficiency. Modding things will probably require that you use the modified thermostat.

Inquire if he installed a 160 degree thermostat. Mine runs around 178 on highway and 190ish in town on a hot day.
Check the radiator for debris blocking airflow. Also between the A/C condenser and radiator. One member fought cooling issues and it turned out to be a lot of debris between the two. I flush mine out with a water hose from the engine side.

Thanks guy,i will check the radiator,no he did not change the thermostat,he said the 160 would not let it run hot enough in the winter. He & many others said that a good number is around 200 degrees for any engine to run at. ??

Unless you have a problem as mentioned or it's really hot where you are it sounds to me like you need a new tuner. The fan should not run full speed all the time.

Ken....

Make sure you're describing it correctly. Are your fans on 100% full blast all of the time? My vette is cammed also, my fans do come on full blast when it gets to a certain temp then they slow back down.

My car runs closer to 220 which I felt was high since my GTO's LS2 ran around 205. I guess the fans lowered you a little. You can pick up the 160 thermo from partsforyourcar.com or several other sponsors. Some members stated in another thread that there is a 170 degree thermo that is better tsince it allows a little higher temps than the 160. Can't remember what site had it though. I guess with you in Texas you don't have to worry much about a low thermostat making it harder to heat the car in colder times.

It that warm enough for optimal engine operating temps? Those are the same numbers I'm seeing on mine with 160 t-stat. I'm getting worried that it might be to low.

That is the question that is posed many times. There are many that feel it is undesireable because it can leave carbon buildup on the valves as well as a couple other reasons related to efficiency of the engine. From purely a performance standpoint though the lower temps are giving increased performance since you're IAT's should be considerably lower and thus you're air/fuel mix more optimal. I can say that I haven't seen someone post up that after a couple or few years of having the low thermo in their car that they had issues from it. Not that that is proof but at least it gives an indication.

My 2008 LS3 Vert in 100 degree weather will top at 210 around town while sitting but as soon as I move it drops quickly to 199. I however have two bottles of Water Wetter in the radiator. You can really see the temp drop quickly after placing that stuff and it never get really high like it use to.

Alex i think the fan comes on when it gets in the 190'S.The problem is that my engine is so dirty, due to the fan is sucking in so much dirt & it makes so much noise that it is screaming when I'm at a red lite & last week i got caught in a downpour & it blew water all over my engine..Had me worried that it would get into my air filter.

As per C6 Manual:

Thermostat starts to open at 188, and is fully open at 206
Fan starts when:
Engine coolant hits 204 (Lo speed)
235 (Hi speed)

or

Engine oil temp hits 302 (Hi speed)

or

Tranny temp hits 270 (Hi speed)

When engine is turned off, fan will run for a max of 2 minutes if engine coolant is 235 or high pressure in A/C.

On a typical summer day (mid to upper 70's), cruising at 60mph, my temps are:

Coolant: 198
Oil Temp: 216
Tranny: 162

If the 'stat does in fact open at 188, and the engine runs at 198, then installing a 180 or 160 'stat will make no difference at cruising speed unless the fans are re-programmed or switched to come on.

My 2 cents worth....

I've heard that one has to be careful with those 160 thermostats....
If the engine is running at cooler temps, won't it enrich the mixture?

I took my back to the tuner & he turned my fan speed per the thread above. Now the fan will run at 3 different speeds as needed,so now the highest my coolant will get is around 210 degrees in this hot Texas weather. The tuner suggested a 180 thermostat also.Have not found a place to get one yet.......Thank all of you good Vette guys for the help...Come to Texas & i will treat you to a BEER.
