I just bought a 2008 Conv. After dealer inspection, they told me the sway bars were loose, leaking and needed replacement. Cost about $300.00. Any thoughts, if replaced should I upgrade to Z51 sway bars also? I am guessing the current ones are the basic. The car had 51K miles, but price was right.
Sounds like your not much into the whole technical side of suspension. Heres the deal:
Sway bars are connected to the car at the end link and bushings. All those bolts can be tightened very easily if they are loose and their is no fluid anywhere to speak of.
I couldn't imagine a situation where a sway would need to be replaced. Its a solid piece of metal. Its made to bend and its I doubt that you could break it unless you were rear ended.

Did they check your carburetor too? (no offense intended)
I just had my car in and they replaced the end links on my '07 Couple with a upgraded link. I complained about some suspension noise that that's what they found.
I have the F55 (Magnetic Ride) and Dick Guldstrand installed Z51 sway bars for me some time ago. This made a huge improvement in the cars cornering capabilities. It actually took 5 seconds off my lap time at Willow Springs.
In any case, what every you have done to your car, don't do it at that dealer! If you're not a member of a local Corvette Club (Midwest Early Corvette Club, 2101 South 120th Street, Omaha, NE 68144) , join quick, and ask around for reputable dealers or Corvette servicers in your area.
Sway bars are a solid piece of metal, connected to the car through a set of end links on each end. The end links can need to be replaced (though most can be tightened) and perhaps the bushings too....but as others have stated....there is nothing to "leak" -- I for one cannot believe that a dealer would even try to tell someone this...and if they really thought that what they were telling you was the truth, they are idiots! RUN, don't walk to another dealer ---- NOW!

You're probably right in the OP's case but just FYI...certain end links can leak. I have T1 sway bars and end links....each end link has two zerk fittings to grease and the seals can leak.

Seriously. When did sway bars start leaking? Is there a tsb on that? Is it 05 specific?
Do you think there's something else leaking perhaps?
Thanks for the info. I have had a vette since 96, but have no knowledge of the suspension. I have only changed plugs, belts, etc. I have been working with this dealer for about 20 years. I will make them show me what they are talking about. I has been alot of years, but I have overhauled engines, removed and rebulit about everything on older cars. Thanks again.
