Thell him you don't understand what he's trying to say. After he rambles on for a while bring someone else into the conversation and have him explain it to them. Steer the conversation towards him, his cars and wife. Do this until you have 5 or 6 people standing around asking this guy questions about all his personal choices , then slowly walk away .
Its always jealousy. I usually boast loudly which part of my lifestyle would be the compensating factor. I'm a national level bodybuilder, own a new corvette, LEO with Tactical responsibilities, or just the fact that I'm extraordinarily good looking.... I leave it at every part of my body is superior to theirs. I get up on stage in posing trunks. They can check out the pics on any bodybuilding site.

I had two kids in a rice burner pull up beside me and start yelling all kinds of things about me and my car. One kid starts flipping me off but in the mean time a LEO pulls in behind the rice burner. He sees whats going on, turns on his lights, and give me the thumbs up as he drives by. I just waved as I saw them being handcuffed.
Whenever someone suggests that any of my toys (like my Corvette) are part of some mid-life crisis, I usually respond by saying that if you're my age (mid-50s), and you don't have a really nice car or boat in the garage, or something similar, then it may not be ME who is having the mid-life crisis . . .
I always have a few responses chambered for those that like to comment, I've listed a few below:
a. I'm not compensating, 400 HP compliments my enormous genitalia nicely.
b. I got a Vette cause I felt like a loser driving (insert wise asses car here).
c. Your wife doesn't think I'm having a crisis. In fact, she said you were having a different kind of crisis.
d. Yeah, I got a Vette, and I had to hock all of my gold chains to get it.
e. Do you know the difference between your wife and a Vette? Most people have never been in a Vette.
f. Go f**k yourself.
I think the best thing to do is be happy. I had a gal actually say that to me at a party once. We ended up going out for a month; I dumped her because she was nuts, likely because she was truly miserable inside. The text book psycho nearly every guy has one of in his closet (if you didn't, then consider yourself lucky).
In my experience people who say stuff like that are the ones compensating by trashing you because they are hollow inside.
One in the closet???? Damn I have a walk in closet full of them...
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
