Default Help finding Squeaky Pulley

Need some help finding a squeaky pulley. I'm trying to use just my ear, but I can't get a good idea of where it's coming from.

It is a low speed squeak, so i figure its a larger, slower pulley.

Also, if it makes a difference, its much colder than normal right now here in Houston, and the car is a warm weather car (came from Phoenix)

Car is stock 2005, 36k mi, MN6

its a later model; vin is 16389 so I should be some 5 thousand cars away from the "problem" series.

Is the harmonic balancer a slow squeak? what about alternator or a/c compressor pulleys, or tensioner pulley?

I would bet that replacement of the belt will cure your problem.

you could try some belt lube also to see if that is the problem, but that stuff is really messy since it gets thrown all of the place.

If the belt is the case, then it's likely squeaking due to colder than usual temps here right now?

The squeak went away last night when the car was driven a bit.

The squeal is usually caused by a slipping belt so a new belt should fix your problem.

I know it doesn't compare to the vette, but I had a ford ranger that during the winter months would get that squeaking/squealing - it would do it at varying times and at different RPMs it would go away. The stop squeak worked for about a week and then it would come back until I changed the belt (and the idler pulley as it no longer put hardly any tension on the belt).

The plot thickens. This Saturday the Harmonic Balancer/Crank Pulley decided to self destruct. Not the bolt - that is still tight as ever, rather the rubber separator failed and the outer ring that the belts are on, walked backwards into the timing cover and started grinding. Car is at the dealer right now waiting to see what the verdict is

Actually not - I believe the recall is on the bolt affixing the harmonic balancer to the end of the crankshaft. This is a separation of the harmonic balancer itself. I'm betting that isn't covered.

Same thing happened back in october on my 05 vert vin 26738. Its about $850.00 for the repair. Mine failed at 28000 miles.

Spray some brake cleaner on the pulleys while the car is idleing. Keep you face away in case it flies up. Stay away from those spray belt dressings, they make it worst. Usually it just a little dirt, dampness or slight oil film.

This definitely isn't the Bolt Backing Out issue. The bolt was still plenty tight.

I bought the car certified used so it had a 5 year/100k powertrain warranty which expires in 3 weeks. The service writer said (before I brought the car in) that the harmonic balancer was part of the powertrain for warranty purposes, so hopefully that'll be covered, but I'm waiting for a call to tell me that some other part like belts or the collateral damage to the timing cover isn't covered by warranty......

If the warrantied part causes collateral damage, then that damage should be covered as well. That's been my experience in the past.

This is making me nervous. I just recently noticed a squeal at idle on my 05 when the engine is cold. The squeal is not there when the engine is warm. I've never worried about the crank pully bolt because my vin# 29050.

Is there any way, short of removing, to check the Balancer/Crank Pulley.

I have a slight whine when really cold. I'm assuming it's the water pump which was just replaced 14k miles ago. But, since it goes away after warmed up i'm not too worried about it.

The only way I've heard of to check for harmonic balancer separation is if it wobbles. I had a very very slight wobble - enough that I thought it was running true. The sound it made didn't sound like a squeal like a wet or loose belt. It was more like a chirp. It wasn't a steady noise, it was rythmic; you could tap your foot to it.

There was a video on youtube that had the exact sound. I'll see if I can find that.

I'll keep you guys updated when I hear something!

I would tray a new belt.

If it is the belt or tensioner, you can try to diagnose by putting more torque on the tensioner with the engine at idle using a 1/2" drive breakover, but be very careful.

If it is a bearing on one of the accessory drives (generator, AC compressor, etc), you can use a mechanics stethoscope to try to isolate the noise.
