Default Exhaust Drone

The dreaded exhaust drone has been discussed here many times. My question is does the drone actually somewhat vibrate the car or is the drone just a irritant to the hearing senses.

IMO a little of both...the annoying resonance is a vibration affecting car and driver.

Me too..It is a little of both. If I open the flaps and let the RPM's drop to say 1600 on a hill in 6th I can make your fillings rattle.. You can also feel the pulsing pressure on your eardrums. It can be really annoying..
Headers really bring forth the drone monster..

Exhaust drone affects people differently. I could not drive my vette longer than 20-30 minutes without a headache when I had a cat back system with a lot of drone.

I had to do the NPP in a box for that reason. Sometimes its music to the ears, and sometimes its .....Just like a woman.

For me definitely both. I find as I'm aging that low frequency stuff that is continuous bugs the crap out of me and I do "feel it" as well as hear it. My Corsa Sport system gets rid of all that, car is now one of the quietist sports/performance cars I've ever owned.

My '07 was the quietest car of any ilk that I've owned. Decided to remedy that with Magnaflows and an X pipe . . . Problem solved.

Yes, now there is drone. It can easily be remedied with the shifter and/or the throttle. It only drones when it lugs. It certainly makes shifting more fun !

I went a little safer route, I bought the American Racing headers w/cats and left my stock mufflers in place on my 06'.
I only paid a little more than some that buy an aftermarket cat-back system but gained 20 rwhp with no drone. I wanted sound and power increase. For anyone who is still running stock manifolds, you cant believe what a poor design/restriction they are at least on the LS2 cars.

I can only tell you what I have right now. Corsa Sports Axle back. I have not put the cross pipe in yet. No DRONE. I love it. TIM$VETT

Neumonic,
You did exactly what I've been considering for my '06 with MN6.
Did you verify those HP figures on a dyno?
Are the cats also from American Racing?

I used AR headers/cats on my 08, and kept the stock mufflers for about a year. They are just a touch louder with headers, until you get on it, then they scream..But no drone.
I got a set of Z06 mufflers on an auction site for $220 shipped, so I could not pass that up. I really like the ability to go quiet, or loud depending on the mood..

I agree. With one of my previous cat-back systems the drone was so bad at some RPMs that it had trim in the hatch area vibrating.

That's where I ended up.
I still think NPP would be the best solution, because "sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't"....but I'm not going to retrofit it in.

I am off most of the week next week and plan to dyno the car one of those day's. I just put the headers on a week ago yesterday and was very surprised at the SOTP difference I could feel especially when I am over 3k rpm's...

The sound is close to what I was looking for. Oh and the high flow cats, not sure who makes them for ARH but the vender I purchased from said they are excellent.

I think it would take a couple of tenths, (or more), off the 1/4 mile
time to get a "SOTP" result.

I'll 'G-Tech' my car before and after the headers/cats.
Hey, I've been looking for an excuse to bang the gears...

The Corsa system is guaranteed not to drone and are of high quality.

My friend Bob (forum member) has one of their systems on his car and I like the sound.

I chose to do Long tubes for the HP increase but one could say a car with X, Y or Z cat-back system might sound better.

I found with Exotic Vette's insulation kit I can leave the NPP open a majority of the time. There are those times when it is nice to go into silent mode.

Drone is caused by the exhaust sound waves that vibrate inside the cabin and in turn yes, becomes irritating to the ear.
Like being inside a ringing bell
I have NPP exhaust w/ M2W switch.
With the flaps open and windows open and/or top off, I don't notice the drone.
The sounds waves are not captivated inside the cabin.
Windows up/roof on, the drone happens at the regular drone RPM's.
I have noticed the drone is less now since the exhaust started to break in around 5000 miles.
Still has drone but not as bad
I also have the collars on the vaccum arms so the flaps are always "slightly" open.
Great sound with No drone at all and when I want the real noise, just open the flaps
