radar detector - WTF ?
Just askin'
OK, I'll admit it for you: I want to speed and I don't want to get caught.
Now that we've got that out of the way, can you honestly say that speeding tickets aren't all about Big Money? On the one hand, you've got the "speed enforcement" corporations who sell their wares to the authorities who, in turn, use these devices to extract revenue from motorists.
Speeding is the one of easiest money-makers there is: everybody does it and it's relatively easy to catch somebody doing it. And, this last part is the key. There are any number of other driving behaviors that entail far more risk than "speeding". Driving while distracted, not allowing sufficient following distance from the car ahead, failing to signal when changing lanes, driving slower than the rest of traffic forcing others to pass them on the right, etc. But, with officers so fixated on catching
"speeders" (which, again, is easy) they aren't focused on the real problems enumerated above.
When everybody get serious about curtailing these sorts of behaviors, then I'll give the "we want you to slow down for safety" argument more consideration.

On a separate but related note, I often wonder why every topic on radar always contains posts by those with the "don't speed" message even though it isn't related to the question being asked by the tread. It almost seems like it is a moral imperative for those just having to get this message out. I am not personally bothered by it, but have now just become somewhat amused at the predictability over the years.

OTOH - the sermons do get old. But I know the LEO's here like my friends cthusker and Cor08vette are good guys looking out for us.
BTW Today I drove 585 miles and switched on the noisemaker one more time, just to be sure, and it never shut up - alarming on X, K, and Ka.

US Department of Transportation study finds only five percent of crashes caused by excessive speed.

We all know most wrecks are caused by jack asses - not speeders.
I drove 585 miles today. I only saw one po po all day - and where do you think he was?
Loop 285 Atlanta, where the speed limit suddenly dropped from 65 to 55mph. He was parked on the shoulder, car door opened - pointing a radar gun at us.
Was he keeping us safe?
No. He was generating revenue, plain and simple.
All the software updates in the world do not give the V1 GPS capabilities and a update-able speed camera database. The V1 was a good detector in it's day, but that day has passed. Trust me....
I am willing to let anyone "Test" my unit shoot me a PM, and with a deposit I will ship it too you to test for free and then you send it back when done "testing"
Have done this several times with other V1 owners....Let's just say the V1 went up on ebay within 2 days

Shoot me a PM is you want a free test drive....

I run 2 detectors in my Vette, a 9500ci and a 812 version V1. The ci is the only detector that actually beats the V1's performance, and it usually wins by a big margin. But it costs 4 times what a V1 does so it should win. It also has the same I/O and QT problems of the 9500ix. This is due to the filtering algorithms used by Escort in their attempt to have a quiet detector.
The DPS features of the 9500ci and 9500ix have also been documented to lock out real threats from LEO's and one member on another forum I am part of has actually gotten a ticket because of this happening. I hardly think the 9500ix is a V1 killer, a good detector yes, a quiet detector yes, a V1 killer no.

Texting and talking on cell phones while driving is far more dangerous than speeding, but speeding is easy, quick and provides plenty of $.
The traffic court in my county last year generated $16 million dollars in fines. That's big business!!
