I've been hearing my brake squeaking on the 2008 that I've had for 11 days. Its got 29.5K miles and its still under its 30 day warranty from Carmax and the 3 year/36K mile GM warranty..
I think the noise is coming from the right rear disc brake (which has drilled rotors). Is this something I can easily fix, or would it be covered by the factory warranty?
Thanks.

I got new rotors, hawk cermaic pads... because I searched this forum looking for answers and everyone said to get new pads....
it was FINE just FINE all summer long until the colder months rolled in now it's starting again.
Very common issue with this vehicle; especially with factory Z51 pads. I had it as well. Changed to ceramic pads and have never had a problem since. The GM ceramic pads seem to be as good of an alternative as any.
And I've read where going to ceramic pads doesn't create the usual dark disc brake pad dust, so your wheels look cleaner for longer. Also read where ceramic pads shouldn't be used on a race track.

That is correct, they do eliminate brake dust. As far as track, it's not that they shouldn't be used, but they will be the most likely to fade during road courses etc. It's a matter of what you are doing with the car.
I'm just going to repeat advice that I have read, and it's advice that I now follow because it works.
Brake harder. I wait till later when I am slowing to apply the brakes, and use more peddle preasure. It works for me. I rarely hear squeek anymore, and it stoppped pretty much immeditaely after I started doing this.
I have a theory as to why this works. There's a lot of surface area between the rotors and pads on a Z51. It's meant to be a track/performance brake, with lots of surface area to spread out all the heat generated under hard use. It's not designed to be light preassure on such that much surface area.
My 05 Z51 has squeaked since day 1. I noticed it after I bought it and drove it home. It had 4,600 miles on it when I got it. Used to **** me off, but now I just keep on keeping on. At least i know there working. My exuse is that it's a performance car and the breaks are gonna squeal, who the hell cares. Miles of smiles. Btw I have 11,040 miles on it now and it has been 2 years 9 months still squeaking.

Music to our hears for those of us in the brake and rotor manufacturing. Brake late and press harder. Z51s make noise, make dust and wear rotors because GM uses semi metallic brake pads. Are they racing pads? No. They are a good performance pad which most owners will never ever see the upper stopping limitations. But you have a steel wool pad rubbing against a cast iron rotor. Where do you suppose the noise is coming from?
True ceramics use non ferrous metals such as copper, not steel wool. Changing to a ceramic pad will stop 95% of the noise issues. No noise, very little dust and the rotors last longer. And most owners will not see the upper limitations for the ceramic pad either.
Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™
The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser, and has won multiple SCCA Solo 2 and Prosolo National Championships. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. Bobcat 1521™ compound has also been found to extend the life of your rotors 2-3 times. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.
I have Delco Ceramic pads on my 09, ordered from Gene Culley. They do squeal sometimes, seems to come from the rear, when it happens I bed them hard for a few applications and the noise goes away, on the whole they are quiet and most of all very clean! I belive the Base, Z51 and the F55 all use the same pads, only the Zo6 are different.
Do not use them on the track, for that I use Carbotech XP10 and XP8, best track pads!

Reason: .
Not sure what type of squeak you are hearing. If the pad wear indicators are squeaking you could have an issue, however, the noise from them usually sounds quite a bit different from normal pad squeaks. With that many miles you shouldn't have rear pads that are worn out. However, check the brake pads to make sure the pads are not worn down with the wear indicator hitting the rotor. If they aren't don't worry about the squeak. The Vette has good brake pads and good pads can squeak. You should hear a top grade racing brake pad squeak under heavy braking on a track. The fact somebody's Honda didn't squeak doesn't mean a thing as it may have just had low quality pads.

The 2008 Z51 and F55 have the same brake setup. The main reason they squeak under light loads is that the metallic pads need a little more heat put into them than what you do in normal driving. When I her mine, I do a couple of hard stops from 50-60 and they quit for a few more days.... ( Most metallic with usually do this )
Just make sure no one is behind you if you chose to try this of course.....

I will chime in here about noise from the rear brakes, I had some noise in the back when I got my car (used) and it started when backing up, and eventually progressed to happening while driving. It turned out that the rear e-brake shoes/pads had broken up. Dealer replaced them for me after a bit of back and forth because they consider brakes wear items (I consider broken a bit different from wear).
I haven't looked at the design of the e-brake yet so I can't tell you how it comes apart or anything so I can't be of help on ease of fixing.
Do 2008 Corvettes with F55, Z51, and Z06 use the same pads and rotors? I'm just trying to figure out the correct ceramic replacement pads for my F55.
The c6 pads are the same for the different suspensions, the Z06 is different.I installed the Hawk ceramics on my 08 z51 and no noise and almost no BRAKE DUST,i have not washed the inside of the wheels in over 3 weeks (the insides still are silver) if u rub your finger on it u will get it a lil dirty but its 95% better, and as far as stopping i don't notice any change....hope this helps..
