Default Purchasing Corvette Out of State

I have noticed a couple of posts lately about purchasing a Corvette through the forum dealers for the best price. How does it work when you live in one state and the dealer you want to buy your new Corvette from is in another state?

Specifically, Who handles the registration, sales tax, and what additional costs are involved? Are you able to roll all of the fees into your initial loan or do you need cash on hand for miscellaneous fees?

I am also assuming the vehicle is shipped to a dealer in my area. If this is the case, do dealers get upset because you are not buying from them, and who chooses the dealer?

Anyone who has purchased from out of their state, I would like to hear your feedback...

Thanks

I am from upstate NY and I purchased a C6 from a dealer in Chicago. Great deal! You need insurance from your own company at home as they probably wont let you take the car off the lot without it, or if you plan on driving it home. Dealers can assign a temporary reg/transport tag to the car. They do this all the time. DON"T pay out of state sales tax. NYS DMV told me that Illinois was one of the many states that did not have reciprocity with NY re: sales tax collection, therefore no authority to collect it. If the dealer tries to do so, they may be scamming you. Call your respective DMV prior to the transaction. They can tell you all about out of state transfer. I had my car shipped back home by Tom Sunday Trucking out of New Kingstown PA, Great people.(www.sundayautotransport.com) I picked it up at one of the NYS Thruway truck stop area's and drove it to DMV where I registered it. I paid NYS sales tax/reg fee and got my plates. Pretty simple.

Mine was easy. I bought the car in Virginia, and the dealership added in North Carolina tax and registration fees into the sale price, gave me a temporary plate, and I was on my way. The permanent plates arrived in the mail a month later and the only requirement (from the dealership and the bank) was that I have insurance in effect to drive the car. Sometimes the dealership will have temporary insurance available for purchase if you aren't covered, but it is generally expensive.

I'll add one thing if you're buying used, my dealer wanted to add $900 in dealer prep and inspection fees to my price (my car had 953 miles on it). I had to argue two times (he played the I have to ask the used car manager game) before we settled (I gave in) on $125 in paperwork fees. I emailed the dealer a copy of my check before I left and asked if there was anything else I needed. A copy of that email helped.

I think the tax issue can vary by state. I ordered one from MacMulkin in N.H. They Fed Ex'd me the paperwork and the provided a Fed Ex envelope to send it back in. Done in 3 days. Paid no doc. fees or any of that garbage. They even provided me w/ a temp tag free. Took the paper work to my license office and paid the taxes.

I did the museum delivery, so I didn't have to have it shipped (Highly Recommend). It's my understanding if you do have to have it shipped to another dealer, you will have to pay for that as it appears the dealer your having it shipped to will charge for that service. That needs to be arranged with the receiving dealer. I saw a message on here before that it is best to go directly to the service manager and work it out.

I was concerned when I ordered mine about the process, but went off without a hitch. It was easier than sitting in some guys sales office nit picking me to death.

I'm in Florida and bought my car through Kerbeck in NJ. I did museum delivery. Kerbeck handled all of the taxes, registration, etc. through Florida. I paid FL sales tax and Kerbeck took care of getting my FL plate sent to me. I was issued a NJ temp tag for the ride from the museum to FL. The whole ordeal was simple and painless.

Default Buying out of state...

I purchased a new car in Az in 2005. I live in Ia and was in Az for a few months of the winter. I got screwed by the Chevy dealer in Mesa. Used to be a large dealer, I can easily see why they are no longer a large volume dealer. If you are going to buy a car from an out of state dealer start by making a call to the license people in your state and have them explain how it works, Then continue to deal with that same person in your state till you are done. When you stop to think about it, its a little unreasonable to think that the selling out of state dealer knows the rules of the other 49 states. They will tell you they do, but they dont...

I'm in the middle of buying my 2010 from Tommy Jr at MacMulkin in NH. Tommy goes out of his way to make the process easy as pie. Because he offers such great pricing, many people outside of NH purchase from him. If I were you, I'd give him a call, make sure to tell him you heard of him from the Corvette Forum, and be prepared for a GREAT experience.

I am in MN and bought mine in South Carolina. Since SC doesn't have a sales tax based on a percentage of the purchase price, but instead a flat rate, I paid the $300 or so, and then when i registered in MN I paid the sales tax for my state minus the $300 I had already paid.

Pretty easy overall. Oh and I drove mine back as it was cheaper to fly out and drive back in a weekend than it was to have someone ship it. The dealer I bought from would not do a transfer of the car for some reason.

The only problem I had with mine was that even though the dealer knew weeks in advance the day and time that I would be there, the car wasn't even close to prepped right! I ended up spending 3-4 hours there while they gathered and fixed the issues I had with the car: no floor mats, owners manual, cargo net or sun shade, empty gas tank, sap in the paint which you couldn't see from the pictures and a few other issues.

Overall, I got a really good deal on exactly the car I wanted, but my experience with the specific dealer wasn't so great (took me over a month to finally get my sunshade).

I purchased mine from Tommy Jr. 2 years ago. I did Museum Delivery.
Was a painless experience. Tommy went out of his way for me and was very pleased with the entire experience.

I see that you live in CA. The situation is much more of an issue for you because of the Draconian tax laws in CA. You may end up having to pay sales tax twice, and it cannot be rolled into the loan. You would have to ensure that the dealer you buy from has done this before, and that they are able to give you a temporary registration to get the car home, and that their state will do this without paying any tax. When you get back to CA and register the car, they will assess a 'use tax' (which just happens to equal the sales tax rate) on an out of state purchase. This is done to avoid having people go to Oregon where they have no sales tax to buy cars.

Disclaimer - I have not lived in CA for a while, but that was the case. Check with an attorney familiar with CA tax law. The cost will be worth it.

In my case, I used Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Mi.(forum supporter) amd did the R8C Museum Delivery, brought the car to California and registered for the first time. Stanford provided the temporary registration to get me out here. I provided the proof of insurance. Drove it hear, next day after arriving, I was at the DMV will all the paperwork. Got a temp registration for here in Calif. and off to get it smogged. Yes, had to have it smogged since I drove it across the state line instead of it being trucked or trained across the state line. No on new how to smog a CAN Enabled system so had to go through the Calif. smog referree. Yes, paid the sales tax and registration to Calif and no one else. Got the smog them back to the DMV, got my plates.
It was the easiest car purchase that I have ever done in my life. Yes, I was worried, the whole time but in the end, it was simple. Also, mine was a GMS purchase that went through perfect.

Live in Fl., purchased car from Fictner in Montana. Easiest deal I've ever had. Sent personel check and insurance info, received temporary plate by the time car arrived at Fl., dealer for courtesy delivery. Paid taxes at local tag office where I ordered vanity plate 6SPD GS . Would do again if local dealer could not meet price.

I bought my new 09 GT 1 Z06 from Bud's in Ohio. Ohio collected 5% of the tax and they keep it. they do that because CA charges Ohio residents sales tax on cars when they buy here. so, i picked up the car in ohio and trailered it back to Big Bear, CA. Yes the car had to be smogged even though the vettes are 50 state smog approved. I had to pay CA the other 3.75% sales tax and got the car registered. I did not have to go to a smog referee. The process was a bit of a pain but not too bad. Love the car and would do it all over again.

I bought mine from Rick Daniels at Les Stanford, Dearborn , MI, and had it courtesy dropped to a local dealer here in Hawaii. The dealer here charged me $1,500 courtesy drop and they took care of registration, title fees, doc fee, etc. (They'd better!!!) They gave me a form to fill up and went to pay the sales tax at some city tax office. They also did the prep for the car but i was there watching the guys doing it like a hawk, lol. I gave them tip, so they'd be extra careful.
I still saved some money compared to buying it here locally. The local dealers here would not go below MSRP
