Purchasing Corvette Out of State

For those who responded, especially those from California, how much did you ultimately save? Are we talking $1,000, $2,000, $5,000 dollars off of MSRP...???
The reason why I am asking, it's starting to sound somewhat inconvenient for a California resident to purchase a vehicle out of state. Based on what I know right now, it would have to be a big savings for me to do this when I am ready to buy again...
Thanks, and keep the responses coming...

I see that you live in CA. The situation is much more of an issue for you because of the Draconian tax laws in CA. You may end up having to pay sales tax twice, and it cannot be rolled into the loan. You would have to ensure that the dealer you buy from has done this before, and that they are able to give you a temporary registration to get the car home, and that their state will do this without paying any tax. When you get back to CA and register the car, they will assess a 'use tax' (which just happens to equal the sales tax rate) on an out of state purchase. This is done to avoid having people go to Oregon where they have no sales tax to buy cars.
Disclaimer - I have not lived in CA for a while, but that was the case. Check with an attorney familiar with CA tax law. The cost will be worth it.

It would be a great 2K trip back but don't want to risk any impound & ticket using bad tags. For private party sales, does CA have any provisions for the seller to provide their existing plate or any temporary transport plates aside from dealer issued? Can someone in CA. call motor vehicle or Hwy Patrol to find out?
The alternative is paying for a transport but that involves a lot of expense considering it's a 2K miles away plus sight unseen. The other alternative is to do the transaction via overnight mail back & forth and get FL temp but that still involves sight unseen purchase which I won't do. With few exceptions like in MD., dealers always seem to have the unfair advantage of being able to issue temps.

Speaking of CA. I located just the right Z06 by description that's FSBO. If we could settle on price then the next obstacle is legally driving it from CA. to FL. I don't suppose CA. has any provisions like some states i.e. MD. wherby you can lawfully use the existing plates for up to 10 days provided it's in writting & you return said plates to the owner. Most people there are not even aware of that provision.

I bought from Les Stanford in Michigan, picked it up at the NCM in Kentucky, and registered it in Illinois. The dealer got a check for the car and nothing else. They mailed a certificate of manufacture which I took to the Illinois DMV. Illinois collected the same sales tax and registration fees as if I had bought it in the city/township where I live. They issued me a temporary plate which I took to Kentucky to pick up the car.
The procedure would be a little different if you don't want to go pick it up and drive home. Yes, many (most) dealerships don't appreciate you buying from someone else and will want to get as much as possible for what is called a "courtesy delivery". Typical charge is in the $500 range to do a few minutes paperwork and hand you the FOBs. You pay the selling dealer for the car and they just drop ship the car to the delivering dealer and send them the certificate of manufacture. From then on as far as registration it is as if you were buying locally as far as you are concerned.
Personally I will always buy from an internet dealer and take NCM delivery. Close to the lowest net cost and by far the best delivery experience.

I ordered mine through Reliable Chevrolet in Springfield,Mo. two hundred miles from here.
I won't give exact figures but they beat my best offer locally by more than $4,000.
My car on display now at the museum delivery 5

I'm in the middle of buying my 2010 from Tommy Jr at MacMulkin in NH. Tommy goes out of his way to make the process easy as pie. Because he offers such great pricing, many people outside of NH purchase from him. If I were you, I'd give him a call, make sure to tell him you heard of him from the Corvette Forum, and be prepared for a GREAT experience.
Talk to Tommy Jr. even if you buy from someone else.

I live in Tucson, Az and bought my 2008 Corvette from Rick Conti.
All paperwork was overnighted and I picked up my vette at the NCM.
Rick provided temp. plate to drive home and the title and taxes were handled when I returned home. It couldn't have gone smoother.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I don't know how it goes with buying from out of state dealers, but I do know that CA has a law that says "new" vehicles may not be imported. "New" is defined as having less than 10,000 miles.

Attached is a link to the California DMV which discusses the issue of importing a vehicle from another state;

Yes, bringing a new car to California, as long as its driven across the state line, then it needs to be smogged when it gets here. I tried to do that with my '07 in late '06 but quickly found that no one had the CAN capable smog check systems yet. They were too new! Smog referree and all was happy. Paid taxes here in Calif, smogged and got my plates. Very easy purchase as long as you have the money for the taxes or arranged it in your purchase (mine was $4359 for tax and registration which I paid in cash). R8C program at the NCM was fantastic and when the C-7's come out, I might very well be doing this all over again, but not worried about the whole process at all now. As I said earlier, it was the easiest purchase that I've ever done even though at the time, I was worried big time.

As Nike says, Just do it! I bought from Rick Conti (corvetteconti.com). Very easy and straight-forward deal. Bought a 2-week WI temp tag to get home. Paid sales tax/title/registation fees to my home state. Done deal...

I live in Colorado. I just took delivery of my new 2009 coupe from Les Stanford in Dearborn, Michigan. The transaction was great, very straight forward, no surprises. The car was delivered to my door by All Ways auto transporters. The car arrived in perfect condition, not a scratch. I would highly recommend purchasing a car from out of state. The local dealers could not come close to the discount I received from Les Stanford. Conntact Scott Montgomery and Kevin Will.
