I just purchased a stock Nav unit from a fellow Forum member, out of his 05. I installed it in my 05 and it is working just fine.
I am considering upgrading to a more recent version of the software. I recall reading that some versions were more accurate than others? If this is the case, can someone out there give me some advice
The only difference between the GM nav disks is the data base. The newer disks will have more POIs and newer roads. The functions and display are the same.
They went from one disk to two (and east and west) around 07 due to more data being included. The two disks overlap a good bit so that you don't have to swap disks if you live near the east west data split.
It also takes a long time for roads to make the update - so if a new road or POI is in your local area, don't expect to see it in the next disk set, maybe in the one after.
As Jim already pointed out, the nav DVDs contain only the map data, not software or firmware. Generally speaking, the more recent the DVDs, the more up to date the map data contained will be.
One thing to check is whether or not your newly-acquired 2005 nav head unit will play MP3 discs. If it can't play MP3 discs, it has not had its firmware updated. There was a firmware update in 2006 that not only gave the 2005 nav units the ability to play MP3 discs, but also resolved a static problem that would surface when listening to FM radio. If you confirm that the update has not been performed, I'd be happy to send you the update CDs and easy-to-follow instructions.
with Mike, check for the MP3 capability and "git er done"...and I would not worry too much about updating the NAV disc...improvements are minimal and in my opinion, never worth the $200 full boat price. You can easily find them for less money on the auction site. Most of the additional info on newer NAV disc sets is just more POIs, which is basically just advertising...businesses pay money to be included in NAV databases. Many here on the forum will sell their old discs for little money when they get new ones.

Thanks Mike, as well as, everyone else that weighed in on my question. The forum member that sold me his Nav unit advertised it as, "Part number is 15263014, it has the mp3 mod as well" So, I think I'm okay. I will try to play a MP3 tomorrow, if it works, I'm guessing the upgrade has been performed. If not, I will take you up on your offer
