So after I had the dreaded and luck of owning the 1-15,000 first vettes from GM in 05 and the Crankshaft Pulley falling off the car. I thought all was well I heard a little noise coming from the motor sounded almost like a exhaust manifold leak. I just went along with it, 4,000 miles later the car doesn't wanna start the car sound like they trapped Vanillia Ice under my valve covers. When I got the codes checked they said camshaft sensor was bad. Called the dealer he assured it yea it probably was a bad sensor and retarded the timing was makin the tapping noise finally I got it over there today. They said cylinder 3 was misfiring and that I had a flattened camshaft He told me $1,500 for parts. I told him time for a cam upgrade.
Made a call to SNL Performance Camshaft installed, everything need with tax, tune, ect ect. $1,800
Not a bad deal, I guess I am going to go ahead and get headers as well to get the max HP I can. I think I'll leave the exhaust alone seeing I am going with catless X-Pipe and I dont want to get any highway drone.
Any recommendations on cam specs? I am hoping to make a realistic 420 whp and it is a daily driver.
I could never quite understand why GM abandoned the keyway but all of the Gen III and Gen IV V8 engines use a press-fit damper with no keyway. This has been the case since the LS1 was introduced in 1997. Your crank-pulley problem should never have happened in the first place but as long as it didn't do collateral damage it isn't the worst thing that could have happened.
Good on you for doing something positive with the current problem. My non-specific recommendation would be to go with a 'mid-range' cam. I generally think you're better off striking a balance of performance and reliability. Good luck!
