I rarely go out of my way and inconvience myself by parking farther away from my destination than necessary. As much as I enjoy my Vette, I refuse to get stressed over the possibility of damage to something that can be replaced or repaired. Life is too short to spend time being overprotective of a car.
Scratches can be fixed. Don't stress the little things.
I double park everywhere i go and if not I snap a pic on my droid of the car and plate numbers that are next to me. My last car was a Mercedes CLK55 AMG and it was perfect till some jack@ss decided to wack my rear quarter panel.
Seriously? That makes you as big of a tool as the d-bags that this thread is about.
We've all heard the stories and it's happened to most of us at one point and time or another but most people think their fisherman stories. Well I have a story and a pic to prove it. I welcome your stories and pics also.
Story
I stop off at Pep Boys Auto Store 15 minutes until closing on my way home from golf. I needed a drill to install a new front ZR1 splitter. When I arrived the parking lot was empty. I was the only car there. As I am headed out someone is coming in. When I step out into the parking lot. There it is. Seriously???? Did he just have to park right next to me with all those open spots? I'm sure that most of us that really take care of our rides go the extra mile to park away from the crowds to avoid any dings. He certainly could have parked at almost any one of the other spots. Do you suppose people just do it to irritate us? I never understood why they do this and this isn't the first time it’s happened to me. I could park my car on Mars and come back a day later to find a spaceship parked next to it. I’m trying not to be to overly protective but once when I had a new BMW 8 series I came out of a store to find a lady with her car door wide open against my car and she was leaning inside her car but bracing herself with her door. Needless to say I was pissed and gave her a mouthful. Ever since then when I take the nice rides out I try to park away from the crowd. Can’t have my vette banged up.
Hope you enjoyed the story, feel my pain and got a laugh.

It happens a lot, I try not to get to bent out of shape over it. I don't understand it and never will. I try to park near curbs or handicap spots and get as close as I can without scrapping the wheels. Usually I notice people who park next to me are pretty good about leaving plenty of space.

I think 99% of them are probably like this elsewhere. I seriously doubt they are conscious enough to pull in and say oh there's a nice sports car I think I'll park over there so I can F up their car.
Serious.
Just like the two doofi's (plural for doofus) that ride along next to each other on the interstate, obliviously blocking all traffic, or the bozon in the grocery store that manages with a single shopping cart, to block all paths for others.
Never fails....I park in the weeds, 300 ft. from the door and come out there will be a car next to me. Hey, it is what it is.
The best story however was years ago when I owned a 64 Midnight Blue GTO convertable. I was sitting in my car, waiting for my wife with my little kids in the car. A lady comes out with a full shopping cart with a rake and a push broom in the cart. She decides to unload her car...next to mine. She swivels her cart and the rake then sweeps across the hood of my car! I yell, HEY LADY!!! She stops, turns and looks at me and the push broom drops on my hood too!! I yell again. She says, "Oh I'm sorry, but, it's just a car!!" Well, I was a little PO'ed, and replied, "How about I stick that broom up your, it's just your big ***?" She did then decide to go load her car on the other side. Luckily, other than a small scratch that's all it was. This is why I park as far away from people as I can. Wifey just doesn't understand.
Most people who drive ordinary cars don't give a second thought to someone else.
They're so wrapped up in their own s--t that they couldn't care less about parking, cutting someone off or anything that is not about them.
Don't take it personally, people are just stupid...period.

Wow.... Just when you think double parking is safer for your car.. Its not. Double parking may not get you a door ding, but it will get your car keyed really really fast.
Whenever that happens to me, it's usually a nice car (or at least a car that's obviously taken care of by the owner) parked next to mine. I feel your pain - glad the truck didn't leave any dings.
On a side note though... why did you leave a space on either side? I would always have parked in the space with a curb on one side... preferrably on the passenger side. That way you reduce the opportunity for dings by over 75% (50% from one side with no car, and of 50% of the cars parking won't have a passenger). Parking where the passenger side is exposed almost guarantees that if someone parks next to you, they're opening their door twoards your car!

A sad, but true, summary of today's society. More's the pity.
The key here is if he parked close enough for his door to easily hit your car if opened. If that is obvious, then he did it on purpose to **** you off. If he is still far enough away where his door had NO chance of hitting your car, he is probably innocent of trying to **** you off.
Early one Saturday morning, I had a guy park his 1976 Piece of crap Crysler 2 feet from my C6 in Target parking lot that was 90% empty. ..and I was parked way out away from everyone. No damage to my car, but that was NOT the point. The point was that he did it to **** me off.
I proceeded to pour my almost full, very large cup of coffee all over his windshield and front hood. It was a nice hot, sunny Arizona morning, so the sun started to bake in in pretty good right away. My reaction pretty much said, "There, now were even you a%^hole."
This Target was not a store I visited frequently, like the gym or local grocery store, so I felt safe with the odds of him never seeing my car parked in that lot again and retaliating.
Years ago I had dropped my wife off to run in the mall for something. I was waiting in the parking lot in our new Grand Prix, when an older lady pulls up on my passenger side. She opens her door and lets it fly so she has plenty of room to exit. Well now her door is wedged between our cars and she can't get it free to close it. I have to get out, go around and pull it loose for her and of course there was a big scrape and ding on my door. I didn't say anything (to her) but I did need stitches in my tongue!

Locally, I have no fear of Target, but Walmart lots are a different story
There are posts here on the forum of guys parking their C6 at the furthest end of a gigantic parking lot. They took up 2 places when they parked (parked sideways) but they were hundreds of feet from anyone and as far as can be in the parking lot of the store entrance.
When they got out, there was a hand-written sign on their windshield saying: "Nice parking - a**hole".
I'm telling you, people do get envious and jealous. One of the strongest drives in human beings, next to sex :o, is pride and jealousy.

Wow. Really? Nothing personal, but that's pretty pathetic.
You're lucky. Close parking isn't a crime, but vandalism most definitely is.
This thread amazes me on so many levels.
Some of you guys are taking it waaaaaay farther that it should ever need to go.

Mr. Goody Two-Shoes,
Get over it, will you please.
Nothing PERSONAL, but your pathetic, overly pacifistic opinion means absolutely nothing to me. Again, don't take that personal at all though.
Just so you know.....in your sentence, it's "further" not "farther". Work on the grammar. Here, I'll use "farther" in a sentence to help you understand the difference: "People need to park farther than 2 feet from my car or I'll pour coffee on their hood"
I would never double park or park in any way that seemed obnixious. It's just asking for trouble. I instead try to take the middle road, i.e. parking away from others, but not so far away as to attract attention to the car. It's a balancing act, and of course sometimes I'll call it wrong due to a in-flux of visitors to the store. It's not a perfect science.
Oh, and if someone does something to your car, retribution is not the way to go. Imagine if someone sees a corvette owner pouring coffee on someone's car...they aren't going to understand, and then everytime they see a corvette on the road they are going to think about that odd incident they witnessed and wonder about the integrity of the character behind the wheel. Sometimes in life we have to take our ugly lumps and move on without letting it sour our minds.
I've been absent from the fourms for the better part of 8 years, as I was inbetween vetts, but I find it interesting and kind of cool that many of the same topics are still discussed...I was sort of hoping when I logged back in 8 years later that I could still see and search the old topics from "back in the day", but I imagine the size of the forum database would be in the Terrabyte range.
