We just got back from Carlisle today (WooHoo!) but unfortunately had a run in with a small rock which resulted in a large crack. Has anyone had experience with C6 HUD window replacement in the WDC area? Any recommendations? What a car! What a country!
Whoever you end up with doing the install, make sure they use the oem HUD windshield...it will say HUD and AP Technoglass at the bottom on the passenger side. The HUD windshield is twice the price of the regular one.
Call your insurance company, they will set you up with a new windshield. The company who installs the windshield will ask if you have GPS navigation or HUD on your Corvette. Have the installer replace your windshield at your house so you can keep your eye on them. Make sure they replace all of the trim properly. The windshields in C6's are very soft and chip and pit very easily. The new glass should have the same part number as the OEM glass but may not have the small GM logo near the part number but they are equal as OEM. If your insurance company wants you to let them repair your rock star broken windshield then do this, park your Vette in the sun for a couple of hours then firmly pop the heel of your palm into the center of the star crack. This will send cracks across the windshield and the insurance company will have to replace the glass. You do not want a repaired windshield on your Corvette. My 09 Vert will be two years old next month and I'm on my fourth windshield.
just had the windshield replaced in my 08 coupe. on the OEM windshield, make sure it's AP technologies HUD glass - accept no substitutes, and don't let anyone talk you out of it - for any reason - PERIOD!!! if it comes from a dealer, it will have the GM logo in the lower RH corner , if it comes from a glass wholesaler, the logo will be removed (something to do with licensing - ???). the dealer (logo) glass cost a lot more, but it's the same glass. , supervise the installation - it's fairly straight forward, just make sure the installer takes a little pride in his work. you shouldn't have any issues. mine is perfect and i opted for the non-logo replacement.
BTW, one final comment. AP tech glass has the rear view mirror and on-star antenna, metal attachment, clips, located and bonded by the factory, and the windshield also comes with the thin plastic trim (at the top of the windshield that butts against the weather-stripping) already installed.
Thanks for the comments. I'm bummed but feel better. Get on it Monday. Carlisle was so great that I guess nit was worth it. What a car! What a country!

if you're looking for a glass shop in your area, do what i did - i called a couple of the larger corvette dealers in my area, and ask them where they get corvette windshield work done. both dealers gave me the same shop here in the akron area. this shop does a lot of corvette work, thus has the experience. even the receptionist knew all about corvettes, HUD, on-star, etc.

This is good advice. It happened to me last week. Stay away from aftermarket glass and choose OEM(not always the same manufacturer I found out but the right stuff). If you look in the lower right hand corner of your own glass it should read "GM Laminated GS HUD DOT-376 AS1 M5341 Trans. 75% min, AP Techno Glass 43R-000058 E6 9". Guardian Glass charges around $1400+ and one that local Chevy dealer recommended is over $1000. I may have mine repaired and wait to replace in spring. State Farm no longer pays for repairs but did recommend Guardian who won't repair mine because it's on the reverse side of the black box. Safelite was pretty aggressive trying to get me to make an appt. They offered repairs at $109 and then called the next day and lowered it to $69. I have $500 deductible so if it's around $1000 it doesn't matter to me what the price is. Tell the co. who your insurance is as they adjust downward on price.
I just replaced my windshield on Friday before I went to Carlisle. I used Safelite glass co. Like other members have stated make sure the have the proper replacement especially if you have the heads up display and the navigation unit. They will ask you these questions when you set up your appointment. If they don't then advise them.
so how do they install the aftermarket HUD? need to change windshield as well?
from what i understand HUD glass has some sort of silver-something coating on the inside surface - must have something with reflective qualities for the heads up. i have heard of people updating their cars (C5's) for HUD, and they didn't upgrade the glass. i don't recall anyone having issues. (JMHO) i'd research the hell out of the subject before any HUD upgrade. FYI - the glass shop that replaced my windshield charged state farm in the neighborhood of $850 for the OEM replacement.

Lots of good advice in this thread, but 2 things to remember when scheduling appointment. 2005-2007 had OnStar as an option, so there are actually 4 different windshields for 2005-2007 C6s. With HUD, Without HUD, With HUD and OnStar, Without HUD but with OnStar. I found this out the hardway when they showed up with a HUD windshield, but no blackout/mounting area for OnStar. Another week before they got the correct one in.
I went through my insurance company, and they paid all but $100. Safelite Auto did the install. Not a bad job, you'll have some find powder and even glass around the car to clean up.
Also, don't be surprised if your rear view mirror wobbles/vibrates a little after the install. Seems that taking off and putting back on the mirror causes this issue (search forum for mirror issues). I'm still debating what to do with mine. The wobbling is really getting annoying.

You can buy the piece that connects between the windshield and the mirror and this will tighten up your rear view mirror.
I agree with all of the people who have posted. I would like to ask for some help though from those who've had the windshield replaced:
I had mine replaced two days ago, and tried using the climate system today. Only the "vent" setting works...no defrost or floor (even in manual mode). Also the buttons to open the door for the gas cap and the hatch next to the steering wheel are really hot when I drive it.
My question is: Did the body shop have to mess with the dash/take off the cover to put the new windshield in? Did they mess up some connections?
I have had the worst time with the shop at this point and I really need to know if they screwed up something. (FYI: my 2005 (28K miles) is a summer car that I just bought 3 months ago...haven't checked the climate control system since I bought it because the top is ALWAYS off...no need for air nor heat). I need to know if this is the shop's fault...I assume there is not a problem when I bought it (though I may be learning from ignorance).
I just had my windshield replaced a about two weeks ago. I can see no reason for them to have touched anything that might affect the troubles you are experiencing.
