Default What the @%$#*!

I admit, I am a new Corvette owner, and I am having a great time driving this incredible car.......but why does evryone think that I am trying to race them?

Yesterday I was stopped at a red light, top down, music up, a beautiful day to drive. A young kid in a suped up honda lowrider pulls along side me, blasting his bass filled sound system. Light turns green, I try to just get away from this knucklehead and he guns it, pushing all 240 of his well-tweaked-japanease-horses against my vette. I slowed down to watch him blaze past me as he flipped me off.

Im, 40, and in my younger days this may have set me off, but what the heck, let the idiots be idiots. No problem, I drive my own pace and get where I am going on my own terms. On the way back home I find myself behind a lifted truck. Afraid of catching a rock, I go to pass him on the left and the jerk accelerates to keep me from passing him.

Well enough is enough, I dropped the hammer and easily slid past the monster truck......but what the heck is wrong with people? Where is the shame in being passed by this premium exotic American sports car? I mean, Im not trying to pass you in a Prius!

I can honestly say that from this day forward I will always own a Vette. I truely love this car!

I hope you did not exceed the posted speed limit while passing. We have a lot of morality police on this forum.
Glad you like your Vette, you should put an exhaust plate on it. (inside joke for those that are wondering)

It may be the first time but it won't be your last. Just smile and don't get sucked in.

"...why does evryone think that I am trying to race them?"

Consider it a compliment and ignore them.

I know what ya mean, I wrote about this very same thing a few days ago. When they pull this crap I just back off. I'm not about to get a ticket (possibly a drag racing ticket), endanger myself and wife, etc just to acknowledge him and play his game. It just not worth it.

Regarding the Honda with the fart can, I suppose it could have looked to a police officer like you were racing. If that had happened, what is the penalty for this perceived racing another car?

That scares me more than getting away from a joke at a stoplight. I am leaning much more to the "pull away slowly and don't give the impression of racing" but these idiots make it so hard not to get sucked in. Even if you just pull away and this fart can squels his tires, sputters and revs to keep up, that could still look like racing I guess. Any more informed opinions on this?

This kind of thing even happens out on the empty highways where I live. Yesterday I had a guy in a monster truck who was determined to pass other cars and get out in front of me, weaving in and out like a maniac even when I was going 5 over at 80mph. Now I firmly believe in letting people go whatever speed they want on the highway, so I move over to let him go by...never try to block people from going faster....but after he gets past me, he backs off and I keep catching up to this idiot when I'm on the cruise control at 80. Every time my cruise got me next to him, he would speed up and take off again. This is the one time when I wish I had that adaptive cruise control from a Mercedes so I could just set it to stay 1/4 mile behind him. What a pain. BUT....the little annoyances like this are MUCH MORE than made up for by the comments in gas stations and the waves from little kids and all the positive feedback that the car generates.

Racing here in VA is a class1 misdemeanor, carries a max fine of 2500.00, one year in jail and possible forfeiture of your vehicle. I am definately not Racing. I am with you, let the idiots go.......I'm just enjoying the ride.

I agree, I-15 is nuts. I'll set the cruise at 80 mph, cars will pass doing 85-95mph then run out of power climbing one of the hills. Then they get all pissed that I passed them and scream past me again. I just let them fly.

I definitely won't race someone on the street. I'll let the little civic punk have his day. I love reading "kill" stories that involve a Vette and then are called out like that idiot Viper owner who was owned by a member here.

Get used to it as it is pretty common. If you can resist the temptation to be firm with your right foot more power to you. I must say I have my moments, sometimes I have to feel the power. Just got back from a short cruise with the Wife. I love the feeling of flooring it in 1st gear around 1500 RPM's with the traction control off, the car getting a bit out of sorts and grabbing second gear at redline. Oh well I may grow up some day.

Both time you accelerated past them. Even though it may have been for a good reason, I can see where they think you're trying to race them.
