The A6 shift **** can be a real pain. I suggest you study these threads to get an understanding of how to deal with it.

gave up for now!
got dark and put it back together. it is a pita!! here is what im attempting to do... southern car parts sold me a kit so i can adapt any **** that i want.. its the adapter that im trying to install.. to do that the old **** has to come off... before i start again next weekend... has anyone performed this mod? i bought a hurst round shift ball... took a to a machine shop and had it re-tapped to a 9/16x18 thread...so after spending all this money i cant give up yet!!! so you know, what it is supposed to do is instead of pushing the button i you would push the ball down to get it into drive etc... very cool idea.. so please if anyone has done this send me a pic. i have an a6....i will take pics once i feel like attempting this again.......
