Default Radar detector Help

Up here in Canada, Radar decters are illiegal. I been told that cops can detect your radar detector??? Is this true? Thinking about buying one, but dont want to get busted ...

Radar detectors are LEGAL in Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. just for your info.
Yes, cops can detect SOME detectors.

The answere is yes and no....... read above. This is a cat and mouse game played by the dectector manufacturers and the dectector dectector producer.

If you purchase a current model that claims it is invisible to the current detector detector you should be OK. Plus I doubt many of your LEO's would have the dectector detector because detectors are not usually sold where illegal.

I don't know about detecting some detectors. My understanding is that, given the purchase of the right equipment, they can detect all the radar detectors. My state is one of the few in US that bans radar detectors. I know they have constantly and continuously upgraded their "radar detector detectors" as well as their radar and laser equipment. Some of it is "donated" free by a locally-started insurance company known by a green, geckish-type animal on tv ads.

Note: if there is a completely undetectable detector, I'd like to know the name and claim.

Here are some claims....

The Bel STi Driver is the best windshield-mounted radar detector that is undetectable by new police radar-detector-detector such as Spectre 3 and Spectre 4. The Beltronics STi Driver offers award-winning radar and laser performance for drivers who desires stealth and undetectable countermeasure.

100% Undetectable to RCMP and OPP Spectre RDD.
With the Beltronics STI Driver, BEL has apparently done the "impossible." They have managed to fabricate a superhetrodyne detector which does not produce LO leakage - typical of such detectors - which current RDDs (radar detector detectors) such as the STALCAR/SPECTRE rely upon to alert proximate detector usage.

What does this mean in real-world everyday driving?

It means professional drivers (ie; truckers who are federally restricted from operating a detector because of some PC law) and drivers in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, Canadian provinces, and certain other countries - where usage is banned - can drive with the peace of mind of knowing RDDs can not be used against them to locate/identify their usage.

Beltronics is the first and only manufacturer to produce such a detector.

It is our understanding the Bel STi Driver was a built on an entirely new platform than their existing detector lines although STi detector appears to share a good bit of DNA with the Beltronics RX-65 Pro - their top-of-the-line conventional radar detector - which is a good thing.

Hey Bill, didn't Valentine have this stealth technology. I have 2 of them and the newest one had it. Plus Valentine will upgrade your old units with new tech. but it's pricey.
PS: we were on the Blue Ridge Pkwy last week-Fancy Gap to Blowing Rock, not much color though.

Norm, Hi! Yes, Valentine's got it.* Trouble is, it is a moving target, so to speak. Tech for radar detectors gets better, but so does radar, laser and detector-detectors. Or so I've been told.

*Last time I looked it said something like that on their website (that they were undetectable by radar detector detectors) and has for many years. Looking now, I don't see it prominently displayed on their Page 1 of the website.

As to upgrades, yes, I've done it many times plus repairs and recalibrations. Not cheap by any means but at least (as the site says) not obsolete either.

Still not much "colors" around here, Norm. Wind's blowing hard tho, and maybe the leaves will blow off before they change!~ Has happened before.

Racer, I see the Sti and I guess the only problem is, who knows what new or newer model RDD some agency is using? especially AFTER you get caught. I mean, it's nice to say it protects you against those two and more, but they're also not saying, we guarantee it. Which means, if you get a ticket for speeding and were using your detector and get ticketed for it, too--then what? And, in fairness, I guess they can't guarantee it since there's no way for them to know if you had the STI on or not (unless you were cited for both the detector and the speeding on the same ticket).

Escort says that the new Redline detector has "TotalShield Technology"...which makes it completely undetectable.

"9) 100% invisible to VG2 and VG4 radar detector detectors, Spectre ii, Spectre iii, Spectre iv, Spectre iv+ Radar Detector Detectors; and and OPP Spectre RDD used by RCMP in Canada; "

Two to choose from now, eh Chris?

So, let's say I DON'T speed. Just drive around with one of these new detectors that are so "cloaked" that nothing knows it's there (except that it's prominently on the windshield ). Who's gonna pay my tickie if I get one, not for speeding, but for having a radar detector?

That is, who's gonna pay BESIDES me.....

ah....no takers? ok, I'll stick with not using my valentine.

All radar detectors use a local oscillator to generate a sample set of frequencies. Older radar detectors used discreet components to do this while newer ones are DSP-based.

Older radar detectors with discreet components tended to "leak" and could be detected by equipment designed for this purpose. The newer detectors, in addition to using DSP technology, have very good shielding which at the power we are working with is not difficult to accomplish.

Yeah, what he said.

A superhetrodyne radar receiver operates by generating the same frequency it's trying to identify as threatening radar. It compares the incoming radar signal with one it's generating and if they match it alerts you. To detect multiple bands (X, K, Ka) you need multiple generators.

These weak generated signals can 'leak' out of the detector and be picked up by a LEO's detector-detector. This is also why cheap detectors will set off good ones.

If the detector is well constructed and shielded, these emissions can be eliminated or at least minimized to a level that the detector-detector would have to be pretty close to pick up the illegal signal.

I'm just speculating, but it might be that you would spot the LEO and would have time to power down your detector before he could get a reading/figure out which car he's detecting.

I've never used my V1 in any area that bans detectors but I would be curious if anyone has had experience with this technique.

One thing for sure, LEO's can't have speed-radar on and use their detector-detector at the same time, so they have to choose the bigger violation they're after, speeding or unlawful use of a detector.

Kinda still comes down to who's the fastest 'draw'.

There are 5 detectors that are completely immune to radar detector detectors. All are made by Bel/Escort based on the M3 antenna design. All are great detectors and all are fairly expensive.

The Bel STi Driver is a windshield mount detector that is the least expensive, followed by the Escort Redline which is also a windshield mount.

The other 3 are remote (concealed) mount design. The STi-R has been discontinued but can still be found if you look hard. It has been replaced by the STi-R Plus, which incorporates GPS features and is available in Canada and Europe but not yet released for the US market. The final one is the Escort 9500ci.

These will run you from 450 to 1600 (retail). No radar detector detector can detect them even from a distance of a few feet.

Applied Concepts (manufacturer of Spectre) has given up on trying to detect the M3 platform. Not enough emissions to make it detectable from normal background noise.

I run through VA all the time with my 9500ci and never get another look. The V1 is detectable by Spectre 3 and 4 up to about 1000'. The fine in VA is minimal, so running a detector is a lot less than a speeding ticket. Especially in VA where anything over 90 will get you jail time.

If you get a ticket for having a RD in VA that they detect using Spectre (RDD) and it's a Escort M3 platform, I'll pay the ticket. If he see's it on your windshield it's yours!!!

Wow! Helluva an offer there...Randy. OK, so now I gotta desert (or is it, "dessert" ) my ole buddy, Mikey Valentine--10+ years with his products. And go back to his "old company" Escort and look at their costly, to super-costly products.

Hmmmm,,,,,,it is getting to the holiday season....hmmm, so if I keep it OFF THE WINDSHIELD .....no detection by RDD, eh? hmmm......gotta think about that one, but I AM thinking about it.

I love my V1's but if I lived in VA I would never use one. I have seen how easy the Spectre IV picks up a V1 and I know they can't see the M3 platform. I run a V1 and an M3 platform in each of my vehicle, but the V1 is just for the arrows, the M3 beats the V1 95% of the time.

Mike makes a great product, but Escort has been innovating for the last 20 years while Mike waits for his patents to expire (early 2012). While the older Escort products lacked the newer stuff is quite impressive and deserves a look, especially if you live in Canada, VA or DC.

Thanks for the insights, Randy, all kidding aside.

But just to continue a bit, I guess Mike really does have an ironclad, non-compete clause of his own doing! Smart guy tho. Maybe it's not so bad to have the stealth detector.

Bill, if it were me, I would have a 'sacrificial' detector in the car...one that the LEO could confiscate, so as not to lose a nice new Redline...but this would be a good test of its' ability to fool a detector detector.

Don't think it's non compete as much as patent issues.

Do they also take you radar detector since it's illegal?
