If the cops want to help the citizens they are employed to protect, why don't they just ticket the people that are slowing traffic down? It's the officer's choice who he pulls over is it not? Will they be happy if traffic stops moving completely?
The cops work for us, the citizens. It is incumbent upon us to demand the cops enforce meaningful laws.
BTW, I don't think for a minute that any cop joined the force to hide in the bushes with a radar gun. You joined to make a difference in society. Making a guy remove tint off of his windows isn't making a difference in society.
Well most traffic laws are made based on safety studies. For example, do you remember the national speed limit. Well, if you are too young to remember (and that would make you very young) the national speed limit was 55. However cars got safer, and it was proven that the law was not needed. Furthermore, almost every traffic flow study was way more than 55. Well, voilà, no more national speed limits.

Yep, it's pretty obvious. All the cops out there defending their honor over it, ridiculous. I don't even blame the cops. I blame the group of politicians pulling their strings, and for that, I blame the economy, and for that, there are innumerable things one could point a finger at.

Unfortunate for the cop, they are the face that the public has conjured as the source of their taxation.

I just paid my $144 tint tax today. The LE in the court were polite, but some metal-detector check-in lady got pretty snotty with me when I signed the wrong line on a form. My response to that was "Well I just got done working 12 hours. You still look a little fresh to me." and rolled out of there. No response from check-in lady.

That is what I never understood. The people with the least power in that building (much like the DMV) are usually the snottiest.

Well, that concludes my rant, lol

I'm a accident investigator. Just imagine that 16yr old, who just got their DL last week, traveling 80 mph. At 65 mph you are traveling appx 95 fps and 80 appx 117 fps. Now that 16 yr old has a preception and
reaction time of appx. 2.5 to
3 sec. Which means he will
travel appx. 66' before he knows what the hell to even wants attempt to do. With that said, speed limits are set for the safety of the general public. If you decide to ignore that, take your ticket like a man.

Well said & explained.. I went to Northwestern University for a 6 month course in Accident Investigation & Reconstrustion...

You know all it formulas etc, & I'm not going to try to start how stopping distance increases 4x if you only double the speed.. and yaw, skid, pavement gouge marks mean , etc.. etc..

Took me 6 months to learn it I'm not going to get it across here in one post...

You know there are so many good point made in this thread on all sides. It just illustrates the problem we all face in a democracy. Namely that we have to convince a majority of those who vote for our elected representatives at the state, local, and national level that our individual beliefs concerning speed limits is the best direction for our community to go in. The following is a true story about a young law enforcement officer who was explaining how he would handle the enforcement of laws in the future:

" I get busted on if I enforce the speed limit by those who would like to see the speed limit raised. I get busted on if I'm lenient and don't write motorists up if they are speeding by those who want to see the speed limits enforced as they are written. I'm in a no-win situation here so I have decided that if I am to be busted on I will be busted on for enforcing the law rather than for ignoring it since I am sworn to uphold the law.
Now I try to be reasonable in the way I write tickets and leave the debate as to what the speed limits should be to the voters and the politicians who make the laws. If anybody asks me I will gladly give them my opinion as to what a reasonable and prudent law should be but I am only one person. In a democracy you have to have a majority vote one way or the other. It doesn't work any other way that I can see."

Maybe we all should be working harder to change the current speed limits to something more reasonable and prudent given the modern roads, modern vehicles, and driver habits. It doesn't make sense to make criminals of so many drivers but by the same token it doesn't make sense to blame those who are hired to enforce the laws if we are not willing to try and change the laws we don't like.

I get so tired of people saying, "don't you have something better to, like catching robberies and killers". Actually I don't, I'm assigned to the traffic division and 95% of my time is spent enforcing traffic laws. Large corporations have employies that are assigned to certain positions to perform a specific task, accounting, sales, marketing etc. Most of your larger law enforcement agencies work the same way. You have traffic units, burglary & theft, child abuse , homicide, etc. Would you want that officer that specializes in traffic enforcement, to investigate the sexual
assault of your 14 year old daughter or someone who specializes in that type of crime. Not to say I couldn't but it would take me longer and I know you would want justice sooner than later.

Most people don't like traffic tickets but just imagine the roadways without traffic laws. No stop signs, stop and go signals, lane markers and speed limits. That stop sign helps your mother get to church safely on sunday. The red light protects your wife when the goes to the grocery store. The 30 mph speed limit sign protects your child when he has to run into the street to get his ball.

Oh, how magnanimous of you.
You are the guardian angel of all the moms and kids.

Now since you brought up the >>"stop sign that helps your mother"<< How would you like me to post the story of the cops in my county that were observed in the act by a DOT agent - manipulating a stop sign to catch and ticket motorists?

Do you want me to start posting the articles from my metro area alone of traffic cops going over the line with citizens during traffic stops?

The arrogant Illinois Statie that was found guilty of driving 120mph and talking on the cell phone who crashed and killed two sisters?

A Sunset Hills popo that was driving drunk and killed several motorists?

I could go on and on . . . or, you can back down a notch or two . . your choice.

Before you start on how may citizens break the law, REMEMBER - it would be very embarrassing to you if any one of us happened to prove just how high the number of untrustworthy cops (per capita) is.

At least the officer gave you your ticket for 80. As you stated you were in excess of 80. IMHO he/she gave you a break. Take the defensive driving and consider yourself lucky. And be careful!
