So I got a speeding ticket this weekend. Cop said I was doing speeds "in excess of 80 mph". He never showed me on the radar or gave me an exact speed, just "in excess of". So he wrote the ticket for 80 in a 55. I can take the driving class to avoid points, but am wondering if I should try to fight it. I've always heard of hte cop doesn't show then it is dismissed. In FL you can only take the driving class to avoid points 5 times in your lifetime.
Was curious what some of you would do or if any of you have fought a ticket?
Use a ticket clinic, I have used in the past and case was dismissed with no fees. Cost me about $55. I am sure you have them in the Orlando area. All you need is the ticket number and your payment.
I haven't had a ticket in 20 plus years.BUT I see cops/radar/chase cars every where lately. From county to state mounties. I have stood on my vette, run to 100 getting on the interstate, backed off and slid by radar several times in the last 60 days. I'm kinda paranoid these days.

see if you can plea bargain, good luck
very nice, indeed
Wouludn't I have to go to court to plea bargain? I don't have a court date as of now. I can request one if I choose to fight it. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.
You exceeded the speed limit by over 45%, so this is no small or accidental infraction. I would take the driving course and see if I couldn't learn something from the experience.

More then likely that's what I'll do, but was just weighing my options. Thanks.

So, how many times have you taken the class? Eighty in a 55 is pretty excessive. Maybe you should track your car to get it out of your system.
A co-worker got stopped last month for doing 92 in a 65. After procrastinating he saw a lawyer. Turns out he was glad he did. Seems Illinois changed many traffic laws all going into effect on 1 Jan and this was one of them that didn't get a lot of press.
Seems his fine could be as much as $1500 and even some jail time and IL gives you 30 days to fight/protest else you just get a court date. He contacted the lawyer on day 28th and he was able to get a court date. He thinks jail time is not likely due to this guys age and driving history. But it's going to cost him BIG time.
Time are changing, there’s no reason to speed and with tax revenue down municipalities looking to make a $$$ speeding is easy pickens.

I understand why you would say that, but this is a highway. The normal flow of traffic is definitely not even close to 55. The average speed is more like 65-70, and that's probably a low estimate.
I should note a lesson was definitely learned, and I will be driving much slower going forward.

Wow. I'm sorry but do you all that are telling the OP he needs to learn how to drive know that all NY highways are 55. Everyone does 80 on them. I know the OP is in FL but I'm just stating that depending on the road 80 in a 55 is the norm. You guys are acting like he was street racing. I'm sorry, yes 80 in a 55 is a little high but you all don't have to kill the OP. I really wonder how many of you have actually done much worse than that and just don't have a ticket to show for it??? To the OP go to court, if no cop it will be dismissed if not go to driving school. Simple as that.

Sarasota County sheriffs will give you 10 over if you aren't appearing reckless. They won't give you any more than that.
I'm sure what the OP really wanted to hear was, "Change your driving habits!" Let's be honest, in these cars they cruise effortlessly and down in Florida, nobody is going the speed limit. On average in a 55, traffic is flowing at around 70 mph, especially in South Florida. Doing 80 is not crazy. It is in other areas, but not there.
