Default Cammed Corvettes

I'm new to this site as far as posting but I have looked at the forums for awhile. I've noticed that there is a wealth of knowledge and need some advice. I have been looking to buy a C6 Z06 and have been interested in a couple of Lingenfelter 660 HP cars. I talked to someone at Lingenfelter and they advised me the 630 HP package would be much better for everyday driving. I have a 04 Z06 that has headers,cold-air, etc. I have had big cammed Muscle Cars and they were not much fun to drive if you got stuck in traffic. On the open road not to bad. My Corvettes are not daily drivers but on occasion I do get in situations where it would be stop and go. Any help would sure be appreciated.

Do you know anybody that has a camm'd vette? Before you drop down the coin - and do significant alterations to your car - you should try to find a couple different camm'd vettes and see if you can go in at least a ride in them, and preferable get to drive them.

There are a bunch of different cams available. And a wide range of performance on them, including what they deliver in terms of HP and torque (and power under the curve), how difficult it is to get them tuned correctly, and their day-to-day driveability.

I'd also recommend you talk to Jason at Katech, and also the LG guys (and there are a lot of others very knowledgeable as well), and be honest with yourself and them on what you want as far as driveability. And then listen to what they tell you.

In my opinion the single most important aspect of good drivability is how well it's tuned as that can make all the difference in the world. The guy who sold me my cam said it was dedicated for racing, would probably rattle the fillings from my teeth and wouldn't be drivable on the street, yet it has excellent street manners (even with the car being an automatic) and idles around 950RPM. Heck, my wife's even driven it several times without complaint.

The flipside to that is I've seen cams that were barely more powerful than stock yet drove like crap.

Ideally it'd be easier if you went with a cam that somebody else already has dialed in as it'll give you a good starting point. If you don't end up tuning it yourself make sure you find someone willing to tune it on the street in addition to the dyno as that's the best way to ensure it runs, starts and drives well rather than just make good dyno numbers.

I agree on the tune and everyone has been a great help so far. Here's where I'm at. I have a chance to buy an 08 Z06 with the 660HP Lingenfelter package. Now I don't know if all the 660 tunes are all the same and I was trying to get some input from owners that have this package. I was wondering why Lingenfelter was saying the 630 package over the 660 for street driving? I realize there is surging with the more agressive cams but is the 660 that bad? This is an auction sale so it's not possible to test drive. Thanks again

Not sure what you are looking for since there was not a question in your opening post???? As for car with 600 HP you are much better off with a SC for daily driving. Huge cam, heads, intake and all those goodies are better off for the track and will set you back more than the SC.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to get a 3200 pound Vette rolling. As long as it isn't "over" the top I doubt it will be a problem....Good luck.

I got a fully built LPE 403 almost 5 years ago...I went with a 'mid-range' cam mostly for reliability. My car evolved into a dedicated track car over the years but I drove it on the street for years. There's no doubt its modified as soon as you start it but I had no drivability issues. I'd listen to LPE...they know what they're talking about. FWIW, I run the proverbial snot out of my car on a regular basis and the LPE motor has been bulletproof...not so much as a hiccup since the day it was installed.

I'd definitely consider Lingenfelter, Katech or Callaway. I always think of Callaway being strictly forced induction but I believe they do fully built, naturally aspirated motors as well. LGM would be another possibility. These guys are definitely the top of the food chain when it comes to Corvette performance. Good luck!
