This should be a great reminder for us all to torque those nuts. Especially after a few hundred miles on new cars. Those aluminum wheels like to shake the jug nuts loose!

As well as C5 vettes. The correct term is "ft-lbs". It's force times distance.

Actually it's not. Not sure how to abbreviate it but it's lbs/ft. As in pounds feet. Force times distance is correct.

For 99% of lugnuts I know they say tighten to 98lbs/ft. Haven't read up on what it is for corvettes....but back with Ford I knew they said 100, but what was the most widely recommended was 98. Had an issue with a lug seizing on my BRAND new True Forged wheels when I torques them to 100 (believe it or not).

You are wrong!!! Lbs/ft is force value divided by a distance value or force per unit of distance. The correct term of expression for torque can be either lbs-ft or ft-lbs. Torque is a force applied over a unit of distance which is force multiplied by the distance (lever arm). Go look at your owner's manual for torque values and I promise you it will not be expressed as lbs/ft or lbs/in.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque

Look in the Section for Units and discussion about British Units which is also US Customary Units.

Here is an excerpt from the 2008 Corvette Owners Manual Page 5-104 that I cut & paste from a pdf file:

Engine Data

Engine Horsepower Torque Displacement Compression Ratio
6.2L V8 430 @ 5900 rpm 424 lb ft @ 4600 rpm 6.2L 10.69:1
6.2L V8 with option NPP 436 @ 5900 rpm 428 lb ft @ 4600 rpm 6.2L 10.69:1
7.0L V8 505 @ 6300 rpm 470 lb ft @ 4800 rpm 7.0L 11.0:1

you are applying a certain amount of force THROUGH a distance.

WOW!!! Where do you get a torque wrench that is accurate to 2% and how much would it cost?

LB ft is what I call it. 100 of them will secure the wheel.

I'm a tad OCD so I always tighten to 75, then 100....don't ask me why.

It depends on what kind of vehicle you drive. Lighter vehicles with smaller wheels/tires/studs or heavier trucks with larger wheels/tires/studs are different. I could be in trouble if I torqued the lug nuts on my 3/4 ton, 4WD Suburban to 100. If memory serves correct I torque the lug nuts on my Suburban to 140 lb-ft. Here's a chart showing general recommended torque values:

7/16" dia. 50 to 60 lb-ft
12mm dia. 70 to 80 lb-ft
1/2" dia. 80 to 90 lb-ft
5/8" dia. 110 to 125 lb-ft

FWIW I would not go with what's "widely recommended." I would always defer to what the manufacturer specifically recommends.
