First, you don't have Homelink, the system in these cars since late '07 is the Lear Car-2-U. And yes, they can be difficult. Not knowing what you have, I'll just refer you to these threads that may help. The tech support number for Lear is included if you need to call. Good luck.
I own a 11 GS. I have the sears brand grarage door opener. I just hit the button on the back of the opener and followed the instructions in the manual and everything worked. Forgot exactly what it said, but basically you hit all 3 buttons, once they blink, you hit the one you want to use to open your garage. Its something like that.

OP stated he didnt have the Smart button, or as labeled on some openers, Learn button. Probably has an old opener.
I have mistakenly called the 3 button controller Homelink as well.

Reason: wording
My garage door opener is a 30yr old Gene screw drive. It still works like a champ but there was no way it would be compatible with the opener in the vette. I got an adapter on line that is basically a new compatible receiver that connects parallel to the manual door opener button. It was about 25 bux and works great.

Do you know if there is anyway to program two doors with one module? I have a two car garage with two separate doors and openers. Seems like I would need two in this case. Thanks for the incite on this as I have been looking for something like this.
I would think that with 3 buttons, you could do 3 doors if you wanted.
I had trouble with mine until I realized there were multiple setups in the manual and I was doing the wrong one. I initially tried hitting visor buttons with the button on back of the door fixture, but actually needed to be holding the remote button and visor buttons

You're very welcome.
No, you would need two modules unless you wanted both doors to open and close together. With separate modules you could, of course, program each for a different button on the sun visor.
Hmmmm Id like to do this but if I have to get to the garage door opener I'll need to buy a ladder. I'm in an apartment and rent a garage....so, not sure what I have.

Homelink worked great with my garage door opener (newer Martin), Lear2u does not work at all. Someday I'll buy their stupid "adapter" for each garage door. Meanwhile I have the garage door opener clipped to the visor in each of my cars.
I had problems getting my GS programmed too. My GMC Acadia was EZ. Nephew had to do the GS. Good idea on the standing on seat I still have to have the ZR1 done
