Default Recall Notice 10118

Has anyone else recieved a postcard in the mail about a recall for "Service Active Handling System"? Mine is an 07. The card came from a dealership that I have never done business with and not the dealer that originally sold the car. I recently moved to the town that I now live in and the card came from a local dealer. I do not know how they would have even known my name. The dealer that I purchased the car from ran a VIN check and said that there are no open recall notices on my car.

Just curious.

Thanks in advance.

I had that recall work done on my 05. There is a wire harness that is tied into the telescopic steering that needs to be redone to prevent the "Service Active Handling" message. It is a minor recall. It did solve my problem.

Default I had to do it

I have a Z51 2007 coupe. The "service...Light" came on and the fix was to replace the Steering location sensor in the column. It cost $470. There was no recall and as the third owner and enough time, there was no warranty coverage.

Hey Brent, I've got an '07 and this is the first I've heard of any recalls associated with it. Is there a recall for this issue, for this year?

I have an 07' coupe, bought new, and never got any recalls. Is this something I should check into or maybe other recalls, too, that, I never got.

Default Active Handling Recall

I took my car to my local Chevy dealer to get this repair done and was told that my VIN was not included in the recall. I have a buddy at work that also has an 05 year model and his was doing the exact same thing mine was. I would get the error and actually feel it grab very rarely until recently it started doing it almost every time I started it but no grabbing. When my buddy showed me the recall notice he received I thought it would be a good time to get it done since it was now no charge. How wrong could I have been thinking a visit to the GM mechanic would be free. I got a GM customer service Rep involved and they were nice and polite and said how safety was their priority but as it turned out paying the tab was not their priority. The reason they wouldn't consider picking up the tab was that the problem was not in the wiring in the steering column but a sensor in the column (Yeah I was born yesterday). Thankfully I had an extended warranty that covered some of my expenses or I would have really been hacked. The impression I got was that once they found out I had an extended warranty it was time to make some revenue. The repair work was done at Monument Chevrolet here in Houston TX, and to make it worse it took them 2 days to complete this repair. I hope anyone else who goes to get this done #1 get's an actual notice which who knows how that was decided. If you don't get a recall notice be prepared to pay up to $400 without a warranty.

Here's the text from this particular recall...dated April 2010, #10118...it only applies to '05 and '06....though it may have been updated since then...

Recall Bulletin
File In Section:
Bulletin No.:
Date:
Product Recalls
10118
April 2010
PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL
SUBJECT: "Service Active Handling System" Message in Driver Information Center
MODELS: 2005-2006 Chevrolet Corvette
Equipped with Tilt and Telescoping Steering Column (N37)
Due to part availability, customers involved in this recall will be notified in phases.
CONDITION
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in
certain 2005 and 2006 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles equipped with a tilt and
telescoping steering column (N37). In rare cases, repeated movement of the steering column
may cause a signal interruption within the column. If this occurs, the message, "Service Active
Handling System" will appear in the Driver Information Center, and one or more of the brakes
may apply, possibly causing the vehicle to pull to the right or left. If the driver does not
respond to the change in vehicle movement, a crash could occur.
CORRECTION
Dealers are to inspect the wire connection in the steering column, and if necessary, install an
additional clip to secure the wire connection.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 2005 and 2006 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles equipped with a
tilt and telescoping steering column (N37), and built within these VIN breakpoints:
Year Division Model From Through
2005 Chevrolet Corvette 55100001 55137341
2006 Chevrolet Corvette 65100001 65115536
Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using GMVIS
(dealers using WINS) or the Investigate Vehicle History link (dealers using GWM).
Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete
vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and
will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports,
Page 2 April 2010 Bulletin No.: 10118
or sent directly to export dealers. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no
involved vehicles currently assigned.
The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle
Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other
than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several
states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the
follow-up necessary to complete this recall.
PARTS INFORMATION
Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care
and Aftersales (GMCC&A). Please refer to your “involved vehicles listing” before ordering
parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an
emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.
Part Number Description Quantity/Vehicle
19179794 Clip, Strg Angle Sen Lead 1
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the driver's side closeout (insulator) panel.
2. Locate the Steering Wheel Position Sensor (SWPS) connector that connects to the
steering angle sensor, located on the lower center of the steering column.
Note: Determine if the (SWPS) connector has a clip installed into the connector, or if tape and
a band tie was used to prevent movement of the terminals.
• If the SWPS connector has the clip or tape and band tie repair, install the driver's side
closeout (insulator) panel. No further action is required.
• If the SWPS connector does NOT have the clip or tape and band tie repair, proceed to
Step 3.
2030089
3. Install the new clip into the connector. This clip will act as a terminal positive assurance
(TPA) and prevent any movement of the terminals.
Page 3 April 2010 Bulletin No.: 10118
4. Reinstall the closeout panel.
5. Clear the DTC with a scan tool and road test the vehicle.
6. If DTC C0710 resets during the road test, refer to DTC C0710 in SI.

The plastic clip referred to here is a very inexpensive part...it is not the steering wheel position sensor....that is expensive.

I got a notice a few months back. Went by the local Chevy store. Service writer looked up,said its a open recall. Ordered part. Went by a few days later and they did it while I waited. took a 1/2 including paper work.

Yeah wish mine would of been that simple, my 2005 did not receive recall notice and that left it open for other issues IMO. I would be curious to know how many have had these exact same syptoms for this repair turn out to be a telescopic sensor.
