Default AC strangeness... working as designed?

its been 100 degree in dallas lately. several days in a row ive noticed this, but as i drive from the 5th floor of the parking garage, the AC in the 60 deg auto setting, its blowing gentle. but as soon as i break out into the sunshine, the AC kicks into full blast. thats the wierd part... in the shade its as if it knows it in the shade, and then full tilt as soon as in the sun.

normal? or should i rename my car "christine" ?

If the system is set on 'auto', then it uses a number of factors to decide what to do....one of those inputs is from the light sensor on the top of the dash. The system knows that it needs to work harder when the sun is strong than it does when it is shady, so I would say it is operating normally. Try the same experiment with the system not in 'auto' and see if it still does it.

It's the light sensor on the dash. I live in AZ and what it's trying to do is keep the cabin cooler when the sun is on the sensor. When your on the 5th floor you should just turn up the fan speed manually until you get to the sun and then things should work as expected.
