Talked to a GM engineer and asked him what the top speed is on my GS 436 hp. auto. He said under ideal conditions would be 182 for the conv. and 188 for the coupe but it would take a good distance to achieve that.
Since this was done during testing, they may have removed (or not yet installed) any limiter, so we can't be sure.
There was a long thread about this a few months ago, couple of people showed readouts of the factory tune and there was a limiter installed, i don't remember if it was 186 but it was right around there.
Someone asked if the limiter was truely "enabled"; one member had wondered the same thing and during tune experiments, set his limiter to something like 30 mph. Sure enough, the car would not go faster.
Since the LS3 base cars seem about 5 mph faster, any limiter may have been set slightly higher. I think the tires have also bee uprated from "186 mph" to "greater than 186", but not specified how high.
For most of us, experiments are hard to do...
According to my info, this was a factory spec. car, but I'm in no position to argue your point.
The top speed questions (especially the "where to run legally?") got my little brain going...I remembered reading about the Callaway Sledgehammer years ago, and it's tested top speed of 254.76 mph, driven by John Lingenfelter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callawa...ammer_Corvette).
Not arguing with you here... just honestly trying to learn.... I thought top speed would be in 4th gear, as 5th and 6th are overdrive and would not raise speed any. Is my statement true just for autos ? maybe I'm confusing speed with HP, gear-wise....

Now that would be a blast. It costs $450.50(incl tax) to run 2 hours(4 thirty minute sessions) on the Daytona Speedway. Plus another $900 for my gas, motels, and food. Shooting for 175 MPH. I just wish Daytona Beach was a little closer. The $450 I don't mind, but the $900 to get there and back home I don't like. Two day boring drive each way.
I would love to try and see if I could hit 190+ on that 7.5 mile track. While the mile drag strips are great, there is also tons of fun hanging it out in the high banked turns on a oval.

Well, I wouldn't call it arguing.
More like two guys trying to figure out what the truth really is.
Some limiters are said to be very obvious, others are claimed to be so subtle you don't really notice them. So if I find a place to run my 2009 up to max speed and it hits 187, does that mean it has a limiter or that's the real top speed?
Probably a moot point, my personal max is 165 and finding a place to beat that will be difficult.
it was a question and im kinda sorry i even asked it afterall this bs did not think it would turn out to b a mine is better than urs post ok guess i found out the top speed the hard way
I have a way to solve this lets all go the the texas mile and see what are cars can do in the mile. This is a pointless argument almost as good as which is faster a black vette or a red one. I do not bench race so for a few weeks until my grand sport is finished I will not add any comments about what my car will do. all I will say is Oct is coming and I will be there.....
Interesting posts...I'm not a "car' guy so when folks ask what size engine; how fast does it go; and want to discuss cold air intakes and tunes and tires...I just give them the deer in the headlight look. I luv my vette but all mods and my attraction to this car were strictly for appearance. But thanks for the info...CF does get me some amount of credibility!!
I've run my 2006 H/C LS2 at the mile and hit the 186mph speed limiter. I've been told by LS3 owners their limiter is higher but have never seen the field in the tune myself. I have since upped my limiter to Z06 speed (205mph) so I won't have that issue next time out.
On the day of my mile run I was hitting the 186 limiter well before the 1-mile mark while a bolt-on, lighter, C6Z was only running 177mph all the way through the mile. The wider body clearly hurts at those kindof speeds as we made almost identical hp and he was 50-75lbs lighter than me if I had to guess.
Regarding the mirrors a few guys thought folding the mirrors would help but all said at @150mph the mirrors popped back out into place so the assumptions made here are false about that being an aid in aero.
The above are real world facts gained from experience not speculation.
