Not trying to cause any oils controversy. That said, I was interested in what Royal Purple had to say about RP meeting GMs new specs. Here's their answer:
Good afternoon Gary,
The most current formulation of Royal Purple SAE 5W-30 (part #01530, quart bottle) is an API-SN, ILSAC GF-5, Dexos1 compliant oil and meets or exceeds current and past GM specs. It is an appropriate oil for use in vehicles needing a GM warranty compliant oil.
For C6 Corvettes that do not need a GM warranty compliant oil a significant performance and protection advantage can be gained by using our new Royal Purple HPS 5W-30 (part #31530, quart bottle).
I hope I haven't reposted something that's been kicked around here in the past.
Thx,
GP

What does this mean for those with an aftermarket (non GMPP)extended warranty? (07 LS2 w/39k)
And when they refer to "modified" its left very vague, is there a definition to modified under these applications? Are bolt on and tunes considered "modified"?
Thanks

The mark of a sucessful advertising campaign is people who are certain that they can "fell a difference" with a different oil. In medicine we call it the placebo effect when people convince themselves of things that are just not logical.
Let me consider Exxon Mobil Oil, one of the largest oil companies in the world with scores of lubrication engineers, chemists, etc. Now think of Royal Purple who is not even remotely considered a major oil research company. Who do you want to trust with lubricating your engine at 6000+ rpm?

How can someone "feel a difference" by just changing oil for another clean brand of oil? Even if you gain 1hp that is at the most 0.25% of the C6's power. I remember when Slick 50 was a big hit and it cost around $50 or so.
The main way to prove if an oil is better is drive the car for about 100k miles and then do an oil sample of the car with OEM oil vs aftermarket oil. I doubt there would be much of a difference and it that many miles other things affect the test. By the end of the test no one would really care.

My .02 on Mobil 1 oil. Ran Mobil 1 in my 95 Trans-Am from the time it was new. The car spun a rod bearing while on the track under extreme RPMs (Stock engine), the engine had 92k miles on it at the time. The machine shop said they could not believe how clean and un-worn the engine looked with the exception of the spun main of course. After a 383 upgrade and running 12# of boost, the engine now has another 45k of trouble free miles on it. This engine puts out just over 640 rwhp...
I also purchased a 2000 Grand Prix GTP, my parents purchased this car from me back in 2004 and still drive it to this day, Mobil 1 since it was new, the GTP is a v6 supercharged engine for those who do not know, it now has 145k and still runs and drives perfect. These engines have an issue with a leaking intake usually around 100k, as did this engine, shop replaced the gasket with improved design, again the mechanics could not believe how clean the internal engine parts were.
I am not saying that RP products are all that people say they are, but I can swear by Mobil 1 products, I use their oil in anything I buy including my lawn mower...

I don't know why everyone wants to be a closet chemist. You cannot believe 90% of what a company puts in their advertising. With that said, I stick with what comes with my car. M1 5W 30. End of story.
