I'm in the market for a MN6 grand sport. Do these transmissions suffer from a difficult 2-3 upshift, or popping out of 3rd gear??? I had a 6spd on my old 96 Z28 and had some difficulties where it sometimes didn't quite engage 3rd unless everything with the shift was done really well. Overall, how well do the 6 spds shift and are the aftermarket shifters worthwhile?
IMO there's no inherent problem with older C6 transmissions and I haven't heard of any with newer models. I know a couple guys who track new GS's and they seem to shift well. The Corvette transmission certainly has its own characteristics (like with any car). I don't think it lends itself well to speed or power-shifting from 2nd to 3rd but otherwise it works fine. IMO people sometimes miss the 2-3 shift in a WOT situation because they're too tense...they've got a death grip on the shift **** and they 'force' the shift. You just give the shifter a 'suggestion' from 2nd to 3rd and it finds it way. Popping out of 3rd gear does not seem to be a common complaint. Some like using a short-throw shifter but I hardly think its necessary. Some racers go with an after market transmission but its rare to find one on a street car.
My MN6 is great for shifting from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th under high rpm's. The 2nd to 3rd shift is basically just pushing the shift **** with the ball of my hand.
I can't remember a car having a better stock shifter and tranny. I've experienced no hangup's.
Execute the 2-3 shift with an open palm and you'll have no issues.
Stay away from wrapping your fingers around the shifter and trying to guide it into 3rd.
It will find it's own way - its centering spring takes it naturally there. Just open-palm it from 2nd to 3rd.
It is very easy to shift as long as you don't try and ham fist the shifter and do not aim it. As soon as you do that you will have issues with missed shifts. Use finger tips and heel of hand to get to all gears. I can shift my 08 with just two finger tips for shifts moving backward and with a slight push of the heel of the hand on the 2-3 shift or a push sideways and forward for the 4-5 shift.
