Default coolant additive to lower temp

It seems that my car has been running hotter than other Vetts I've had in the past (above 220). Has anyone ever had success with any of these additives that claim to lower your engine temps?

NO. Save your money; none of them will really work unless you are running straight water, and most of us are not.

When are you seeing these temps above 220? After idling for awhile, heavy stop-n-go traffic, or what?

This weekend driving around Chicago, yes stop and go. However in past Vetts it did not seem to get high in similar conditions.

220 in stop n go city traffic is nothing to be concerned about. If it comes back down within the 199-206 range while cruising, you're fine.

If still interested in cooling additive:

I agree. Those kinds of temps are normal on all Vettes that have been built since 97 and maybe longer, however, I sold my 86 in 97 and really don't remember what temps it ran at when in traffic but I suspect it was in a similar range.

Exactly ... WaterWetter needs straight water to work. And it works very well in drag cars ... Don't really help at all if mixed with coolant.

Can't mix it with coolant, has to be straight water. Royal Purple has one they advertize you can use with coolant and they say 10% cooler.

220 in slow traffic on a warm day is normal, The temp should come down to around 190 when speeds get over 35 MPH or so !!!

I seem to be posting this a lot lately. Guess there are some hot summers around the country. After my car was blown I removed my hood blanket. Saves ten degrees all around

I was refering to the Red Line additive. I use it in all my Muscle cars. Nothing cools better than straight water but you need something for the corosion problem. So the product really is benefiting from the water's ability to cool better than the 50/50 antifreeze mix. Just a corosion inhibitor. I mainly use it because I have animals around and the cars sometime **** a little coolant.

the Royal Purple additive is called "Purple Ice" - I used to run it in my 70 Road Runner (440 engine)

here's a link for more info:

Royal Purple make good products so I can't see them advertize something that doesn't work.

Thanks for all the input. Went the local PEP BOYS today and bought some Water Wetter added it and drove around town today and the needle never even got to 220. (about 10-15 degrees less than before.) Works for me. thanks again
