I just received my Hurst shift **** ordered through one of the venders here... Well being the genius that I am I immediately removed the stock ****, put on the new one REUSED the original screw... Well once I found out that the boot ring will no longer go over the screw I checked the instructions which of course instructs you to use the NEW screw..
OK, simple enough till I of course STRIPED the old screw while trying to remove it... Now I have to get someone to remove the old one with the proper tools to take out a striped torx head...
Maybe one day I'll learn to actually read those darn instructions FIRST!!!
You should share your experience with the manufacturer or vendor. Not that it was their fault, or they are in anyway responsible for helping you find a solution, but a simple peel off sticker over the hole with a "Warning, use the screw provided! Do not use original screw!"...or something like that may save a lot of other folks headaches in the future. Heck, even a big red piece of paper with the warning in large letters wrapped around the part in the box would help (and cost the manufacturer virtually nothing).

Actually it was very clear in the INSTRUCTIONS if I had bothered to read them!!! This one is totally on me.... Or noticed the enclosed screw and maybe thought, gee I wonder why thats in there ?
Not that instructions are always written in an English you can understand but in general, I agree. Always read the instructions, owner's manual, etc. beforehand. Admittedly, I'm not the greatest mechanic in the world. Years ago I rebuilt a carburetor without looking at instructions. Well, I got it all put back together except for the 3 little pieces-parts that were still sitting there.
