Ok, first let me apologize for my lack of correct terminology. I'm extremely clueless when it comes to the majority of car parts and their names and functions. Anyhow...
I have a 2008 Coupe with 40K miles on it. There is an obvious rattle/clunking noise that come from the underside of the car somewhere near the front on either side. This occurs any time I drive on any surface that's anything less than completely smooth. I can feel the thud in the floor board underneath my feet a little bit. I had a friend look under my car today and he took this pic (and I'm sorry, but I have no clue which part this actually is.. hoping you guys might recognize it enough though to possibly give me some feedback)
Does this look normal? Or is there a nut or something missing betweening these parts. There's a bolt there that's threaded, which usually calls for a nut being in place (i think?)
The above suggestions are possibilities. If you can feel it under your feet another place to look is the spring that holds the exhaust system in place. If not adjusted properly it can make a loud thud. It happened to me.
the pic looks normal however....the clunkin noise you are describing is usually bad endlinks on the sway bar...
Is there a way to tell if the end links are bad? I have a rattling noise in my front end when I go over bumps or even when the car vibrates a little, like coming off the clutch without applying enough gas.
Well I wrote to the service manager at the chevy dealership where I usually take my car and he didn't sound very convinced of sway bar end links causing a rattle/clunk. He seemed to think that would cause more of a squeak. Here's his response:
"Sway bar bushings tend to just squeak when worn, so if it is a clunk felt in the floor pan over bumps, the first thing I would check would be the exhaust hitting under the car. There could be steering or suspension or brake problems, drive shaft or u-joint problems, or any number of things. The other things would usually have associated complaints such as "I get this when I am turning right up a slight incline" or ad infinitum. If you would like to drop it off again some day, I am sure one of our technicians could figure that rascall out for you."
Hmm.... Is it bad to have more confidence in total strangers that are members of this forum than I do the service manager at the Chevy house?? Uggh.....

They make a clunck. Even sometimes sounds like it comes from rear of car. Went through 2 sets of GM endlinks, now have LG heavy duty quiet end links. Much better!!
