Default rear diff fluid

Does anyone know where I can get the Dexron LS 75W90 LS gear oil at a sane price? Just got off the phone with my local dealer and they want $35/qt! Plus they told me I need 4 qts. How much does the rear diff hold?

I have an '08 coupe with Z51 and 40k miles. The rear is making a lot of noise these days.

Any advice/help is appreciated.

Everything you need to know:

I got my Dexron P/N 88862624 from one of the forum vendors (OEM GM Parts). Only needed 2 quarts.

But what the heck, if it's $35 a quart, why not sell the customer a couple of extras, just to make sure....

Replace it with Royal Purple LS, it is far superior and only $9 per quart. I have it in my 11 GS. Dealer charges $19 for a clutch fluid, I've got the prestone synthetic, twice the amount for $6. Plus it does not get as dirty, stays cleaner longer!...dealers are rip offs!

Thats about what I had to pay. No other place to get it that I know of. The dealer wanted like $110 to change the rear lube. It took me about 40 minutes start to finish.

The GM Dexron LS 75W90 works very well in my differential. It is the only lubricant that I have found that has permanently eliminated the clutch chatter. Seems like I paid about $19/quart.

Your '08 is still under the 5yr/100K warranty. So unless you've modded a whole lot of that drivetrain and you don't drive in there with 12" slicks and a parachute hanging off the back, they'll fix that noise for free.

You might pray the service dept. is more knowledgeable than the parts guys.

If you drain the 08 overnight[to completely drain clutch packs] you will need to put 2.2 quarts back in to fill! it will begin to run out when level at 2.2-2.3 quarts so I would expect you shopuld get 3 quarts total

maintenance including replacing fluid in the diff is not covered on warranty! When the rear makes noise, simple change to the new LS fluid and for 30k miles it will be silent. No drama! A simple fluid change!

Fluid change in the diff is not a scheduled maintenance item. It's not even a requirement to check the level unless there is evidence of leakage. And if the level is low, it only needs fluid added, not changed.

The OP has significant noise at 40K miles and that's not normal. It's obvious there's an underlying problem that needs corrected, not masked. When they fix the problem, part of the fix includes new fluid.

I just had my local dealer take care of this exact issue yesterday. Covered under the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty. I mentioned that I read about the issue on this forum, gave them the tsb number and told them it should be covered under the warranty. No argument whatsoever from the service manager. Two quarts and the rear chatter/growl problem solved. (by the way, I checked parts taxi.com and they have dexron for $16/quart.)

I use Redline 75/140 and replace every year. As recommended by DTE for my DTE 4:10's.

Maybe put on 5-6 thou miles a year, with no strip/track events.

Mine was just an occasional clunk while backing up. I had about 19k miles at the time. They did it for free and changed out the axle nuts while they were at it.

Just changed my '08 myself. I did not know it was covered under the 5yr/100K warrenty. 2 qts at $16 ea. no biggie. Plus, I know it's done right.
