recommendations for a small air compressor

The Continental ContiComfortKit is small enough to easily fit in one of the trunk cubby's and costs around $80.

Works great and is one of the smallest available

EDIT ... DON'T buy this pump. I just read a bunch of reviews on it, and almost everyone that has had this pump said that after about 3rd or 4th time they used it, the pump started to make a loud squeeling sound and then would start smoking and freeze-up ... End of story.
Well, I have used mine twice without a problem. Now I am worried that the next time it may fail.

This is a terrific 12 volt compressor. Heavy duty, well built with very long air hose. Pumps the tire up very fast. Plugs into cig lighter. I got it at Griots Garage but you can get it cheaper on the bay.
Also in my emergency arsenal

bottle of slime tire sealant
a good plug kit
... and a few assorted tools: needle nose pliers, flashlight, flares, a rug, a bottle of soapy water & band aids.

Although I do carry a very good 12 volt compressor and a plug kit/tools as a last resort, I highly doubt I would ever crawl around on the ground to try and patch a tire on the road.
The pump will hopefully keep enough air in a tire w/ a slow leak to get to a service station. Anything short of that and I'm calling roadside service (AAA.)
I live in California with great roads and rarely am I very far from a service center. In 48 years of driving I've had exactly 1 flat tire and that was a slow leak, so this works for me.

The adds will speak for themselves, I have used mine at the track when adjusting tire pressures. I have the dial tire gauge listed on the web page that is accurate and allows me to read the pressure while the pump is working.
What I also like is the pump is made in the US in MountLake Terrace, Washington - close to home. I easily carry a tire repair kit that fits inside the pump case along with a Leatherman multi-tool.

Now the next question, I just bought the following at Walmart for $15.00 even. It is a Slime Tire Inflator "AUTO-MID-SIZE-SUV" with LED light, round guage, two switches, and claims to fill a STANDARD tire in approximately 8 minutes. I use it last night after my Coleman compressor went out with valve trouble. I topped off two tires with about 5 lbs additional in each. The pump worked very well in 50 degree weather. The catch per instructions, after 10 minutes let pump cool for 25 minutes, opps! I didn't have the temperature constraint because of the ambient temperature of 50 degrees.
I really don't know what to say now for $15, BUT it did pump VERY QUICKLY and the guage was accurate! I'm not hyping the pump, just stating facts.

Having that spotlight shining on the tire when you are trying to find the valve at night is a huge benefit.
