Default recommendations for a small air compressor

small air compressor - I'd like to keep something reliable in the car or easily transported. Any recommendations?

Just started losing pressure in the left rear tire recently. Been stopping at the gas station every couple of days. I've been wondering the same thing.

Tire Rack sells a compressor that can also inject a tire sealant that is not destructive to the TPMS.

The Continental ContiComfortKit is small enough to easily fit in one of the trunk cubby's and costs around $80.

Bought this little "Slime" compressor at Loews for about $13.

Works great and is one of the smallest available

Even a short video on the link above.

EDIT ... DON'T buy this pump. I just read a bunch of reviews on it, and almost everyone that has had this pump said that after about 3rd or 4th time they used it, the pump started to make a loud squeeling sound and then would start smoking and freeze-up ... End of story.

Well, I have used mine twice without a problem. Now I am worried that the next time it may fail.

This is a terrific 12 volt compressor. Heavy duty, well built with very long air hose. Pumps the tire up very fast. Plugs into cig lighter. I got it at Griots Garage but you can get it cheaper on the bay.

Also in my emergency arsenal

bottle of slime tire sealant

a good plug kit

... and a few assorted tools: needle nose pliers, flashlight, flares, a rug, a bottle of soapy water & band aids.

Although I do carry a very good 12 volt compressor and a plug kit/tools as a last resort, I highly doubt I would ever crawl around on the ground to try and patch a tire on the road.

The pump will hopefully keep enough air in a tire w/ a slow leak to get to a service station. Anything short of that and I'm calling roadside service (AAA.)

I live in California with great roads and rarely am I very far from a service center. In 48 years of driving I've had exactly 1 flat tire and that was a slow leak, so this works for me.

I like compact pumps and tire repair kits, I also ride motorcycles - I have a honda ST1300abs and so needed something very compact and robust. I found this product:

http://www.pashnit.com/product/cyclepump.html

The adds will speak for themselves, I have used mine at the track when adjusting tire pressures. I have the dial tire gauge listed on the web page that is accurate and allows me to read the pressure while the pump is working.

What I also like is the pump is made in the US in MountLake Terrace, Washington - close to home. I easily carry a tire repair kit that fits inside the pump case along with a Leatherman multi-tool.

The small one you list as defective here is $9.99 at Walmart.

Now the next question, I just bought the following at Walmart for $15.00 even. It is a Slime Tire Inflator "AUTO-MID-SIZE-SUV" with LED light, round guage, two switches, and claims to fill a STANDARD tire in approximately 8 minutes. I use it last night after my Coleman compressor went out with valve trouble. I topped off two tires with about 5 lbs additional in each. The pump worked very well in 50 degree weather. The catch per instructions, after 10 minutes let pump cool for 25 minutes, opps! I didn't have the temperature constraint because of the ambient temperature of 50 degrees.

I really don't know what to say now for $15, BUT it did pump VERY QUICKLY and the guage was accurate! I'm not hyping the pump, just stating facts.

As "keyplyr" mentioned, if you're going to bother with a compressor, get a good one, or could be there all day trying. The Griots unit's a Viair 70P and very good. I decided on the next size 90P, as clips directly to the battery, avoiding posible popped interior fuses. Comes in a nylon case, and easily fits into one of the rear storage cubby's.

This is a carryover from my Roush ownership days. The 360R carried a 20 inch spun aluminum spare wheel, the same used as a spare on Lambos. It was needed to clear the large Alcon brakes on those cars but had to be carried deflated to fit in the trunk spare tire well. So Roush included this pump/sealant kit. I've since let 2 Roushes go but have always kept this kit for the next car.

I've been topping off my tires with a free one I got from Michelin. About 1 PSI per 2 minutes. I think I'll get the Viair now.

Had two flats in the field. Learned on the first one, you can never have enough light, so I picked up one of these - Campbell-Hausfield 12 Volt Inflator

Having that spotlight shining on the tire when you are trying to find the valve at night is a huge benefit.

I just bought this. Most of the reviews I found were very positive and it is very versatile and small.

Black & Decker ASI300 Air Station Inflator ....... for $41.30

Will that tire inflator fit ok in one of the cubbies?

I guess it plugs into the cigarette lighter?

Viair 85p. Also have an adapter to connect male end of cigarette lighter to battery terminals.
