The new 2013 GT500 I read was going to have approx 650 HP and based on all the talk regarding the 302 boss should be track ready too.....I believe they are going all out on this new mustang and it will trump the ZL1 in all categories. The GT500 now will also probably compete with the z06 however it will be overpriced probably and definately not able to compete with the Zr1.

Owning one of these cars to a Camaro Enthusiast is like being a check book mechanic…cool car, but not a lot of respect from the community.
Don’t get me wrong…it’s an admired car, but when it comes to putting down the cash…a limited number (can) or will.
Performance Competition….Straight line, sure…most Camaro owners are interested in ¼ mile times and not how many G’s can it take or Nuremburg Ring times. Top of the line Corvette vs this car…no competition.
This is the kind of car most who purchase will tuck away in a garage, bring out from time to time, and then park it back….with dreams of it bringing big bucks some day at B-J.
The other underlined parts also apply to lots of Corvette owners as well.

I am absolutely sure there will be people who will decide they would rather have 580 hp in the ZL1 than a base or GS Corvette - meaning that yes the Corvette will lose some sales to it. And there will be Corvette owners who will get rid of their Corvette to get one.
Some people just like to have the latest, and others will want it because it will have bragging rights of 150 more hp, whether it is actually faster or not. Still others will see it as easier to mod to big power for drag racing.

Here is my .02 Judging by the members in my Corvette club who own C5/C6 cars I don't see the ZL-1 hurting the Corvette. Most of our members are 50+ years old and they don't use the power of the Corvette now. Corvette owners seam to be always Corvette owners. Most of the new Corvette sales are repeat Corvette owners.
Take the ZO6 sales have dropped big time when the Grand Sport came out. Buyers didn't care about losing 69 HP they bought the look and the top coming off or going down.
Did the CTS-V hurt Corvette sales? The ZL-1 and Mustang will bash heads!!!

Second, you bring up a good point. Some Z06 owners got rid of them for a convertible, or an automatic transmission. The ZL1 will be available as a convertible and automatic - so some folks will buy the ZL1 for just that reason. Much sexier to have 580 hp than 430.
Third, yes - the CTS-V has hurt Corvette sales. I've seen quite a few folks here on the forum switch from a Corvette to a CTS-V, and still more are saying that their is a good chance they will switch. Many older Corvette owners have trouble getting in and out of the car due to physical issues as they age.

I am wary of what the C7 will be - more refined perhaps, but I am not expecting a big HP increase to the base model. I'll also be surprised if they continue to have three major variants (base, Z06, ZR1).
Perhaps GM will finally address the interior styling issue.

Might be a few who plan to keep their Vettes in "Collectable" condition, but you can bet 90% or greater of the ZL1 Production will still be around 25 years from now, wilth low miles....I doubt that high of a percentage can be said about the Vette...Some Daily Drivers and ohters are "Road Trip" cars, I don't seem many ZL1's being etiher....

IMO ...............
Chevrolet has dropped the ball on both the ZL1 and ZR2
They look way to much like the stock vehicles.
Should have change them like Ford did with the Shelby Mustang vs. the stock Mustang
