I'm still using the original gas cap on my 2005. Early on I had a check gas cap warning so I went out and bought a new gas cap. Before installing it a forum member suggested I try screwing the cap on a bit more 'loosely' than I had been. I did and everything's been fine since (I still have the new gas cap in its original packaging). I think some of the gas cap problems are because it's different than you find on many other cars...it's not made to screw down tight.
The 2005 gas cap is warranted for 120,000 miles or 10 years. This is spelled out in a letter sent to 2005 owners dated 8/2008.
I first went Chevy Dealer to get the "free" replacement. LOL! I took in the print-out (TSB) I found here on the forum. None of the service advisers knew anything regarding this matter and further more, they acted like I was imposing on them to even look at it. They finally referred me to a much younger service adviser who had the skills to do a search on the computer He then agreed that there was in fact a TSB and free replacement, but I would have to leave my car with them for 1 hour For a 5 min. swap?
This is a good example why I choose not to take my car into service if I don't have too, it sure would be nice to go to my dealer and get, in the very least, QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE...and why it was much easier to just pay for the part somewhere else.
Agreed...Wayne O is right. The gas cap works great if you just lightly turn the cap to the right until it "clicks", but DO NOT push inward while turning. It's very simple and works fine...mine is an '05, and still the original. Just don't push in while replacing the cap.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Why should they shuffle you in front of every body else that came in before you? They were giving quality service to everybody who requested service. Just think how you would have felt if your car was in the shop and they kept pushing the repair back because guys kept coming in and insisting they take 5 minutes and repair his car first. Pretty soon the day is shot and the car hasn't even been looked at. Just having a Vette doesn't make you more important than anybody else.

don't complain, when I brought mine in they wanted it for the entire day, they said they would have to pressure check the tank and a bunch of other crap
I went home and searched CF for "gas cap" and learned the correct way to put in on
no problems since, not the first or last time CF was more helpful than a dealer
I bought one at that autoparts store outside of the fairgrounds at Carlisle last year when mine failed. It is a 10yr/120k warranty from GM but who wants to constantly go back for a gas cap?!The one I bought was fine, tight with no issues.Much better then that GM crap.Gas caps have to pass muster with the feds or somebody out there to even make it to market so I have no clue how GM keeps getting away with this nonsense since 2005!!!

My experience also, except I was able to read the Forum advice before buying our 2006. We sold that car at 44k miles and the original gas cap was still fine.
So far, 39k miles on our 2009 and gas cap is still good.
Some people do have actual problems with defective caps, but the biggest issue is that GM used a design which requires different technique from what we have been doing all our lives.
I ended up with a Stant cap non locking type. It goes on plenty tight even before the cap slips with the ratchet click. What I do is tighten it before the point where it clicks. It's still tighter than I could get with the first two stock caps I had. The only downside is I don't have the cable that secures the cap to the car when filling up. The cap is a 10841. It is less than $10 on Amazon, and eligible for free shipping.*I've been using it for a couple weeks now and give it a thumbs up!
