Default Update to NAV software

I currently have ver. 5 of the NAV software that came with my 10 GS. I see there's a ver. 8 available. Has anyone updated from 5 - 8? Is there a big difference? I would expect updated maps but are there any additional updates on the ver 12 dvd?

Any copies for sale?

Thanks

There is no NAV software update on any of those DVD's. The only update is to the map content. GM does not issue updated software to the NAV unit thru the map update DVD. When they have new software this will typically be communicated to the dealer. Other than the MP3 update software a few years ago I don't think there has been any changes over the years.

For your unit 8.0 will give considerable updates for the map data not the unit (PM me for a price for 8.0) However on older units it does do a update, Watched on a number of 05 navs and takes about 4.5 mins for the update. I believe this is due to compression used since dvd went single disk but not 100% but does do a update.

Take the money you'd spend on the disk update, and go get a portable Garmin.

Then leave your Nav display on the stereo controls. You'll have better navigation, and it will be portable from vehicle to vehicle.

I update to V8.0 from V5.0, but haven't been able to drive it since I purchased it when it was on sale in December.

The Nav unit in my 2007 Vette has far superior features and way more sophistication compared to any of the 4 Garmin units I own and with the added features there is no contest. I have not used any of the Garmins other than in a rental car one time since I got the GM nav unit. With all the features like HUD integration, multiple routes to select from the feature I like the most is it doesn't have to be mounted every time I get in the car and removed every time I get out of the car. That feature alone would be enough for me to choose the GM unit.

I have the map version 8.0 in my car and it is nice to be back to one disc again and I notice the POI's have been updated along with the maps over the version 7.0 I had been using.

My 2007 Corvette was using a V4.0 navigation disc. I just received the newest single disc today which is GM - NORTH AMERICA MAP UPDATE - V.2013 SKU# 22944166. My understanding was that there is a firmware update as well as newer street and POI data, etc. for 2013. Can anyone tell me how I am supposed to update the firmware of my Nav system with this disc? Do I just replace the old disc with this new one and then everything changes on its own or is there something that I must do to initiate a change? When I insert the new DVD I do not see any obvious changes, task bars or any way to confirm if there have been any updates to the firmware or software or anything else. I'm trying to get my New/used 2007 up-to-date! Any thoughts or advice on this?

I think the GM nav in our cars is absolute CRAP! They do not belong in these vehicles! GM should have made a better effort to put a NAV system that matches the vehicle its in. They are not user friendly either, and I can figure just about anything out... But these GM navs just take way to much effort to simply input an address... I just use my cell phone instead.

The graphics are horrible and half the addresses are impossible to locate because GM has them listed in such a way that if you dont enter it just right, it could send you to another state! I cant wait to change mine for something more suited for such a high end vehicle! I honestly feel its wasted money to even have spent on the NAV option.

Get a portable or one that has better features and more user friendly.

We've been using the C6 factory nav for the last 7 years/100k miles over most of the USA, and it's worked well for us. We also have two Garmins, four cellphone navs, and two different "other maker" factory navs. I slightly prefer the C6 over all of them, especially because of the turn arrows/distance projected on the HUD.

Every system has its own advantages and disadvantages, none of them are perfect. Each person should try the different choices and pick the one that's the best tool for how they use the car.

Hey guys; I asked in post #8 about the possibility of a Firmware Update for my 2007 Nav system in my 2007 Z51 Corvette. I just got off the phone with GM and they told me that the new Version 9 (latest 2013 nav disc) does not update the system in any way other then streets. POIs, etc. So, this means that I was given erroneous information initially when I was told that the disc included a firmware update. I could have sworn that I have read here and there that there were some firmware updates for the 2007 system but now I cannot confirm this for sure. The guy from the GM hotline knew nothing about such a thing. Can anyone tell me for certain if there is a FW update and if so how one is supposed to go about performing the update or where to get it? Thanks for whatever you can throw my way.

There was a firmware update for '05 to enable it to play mp3's. As far as I know there has been no other firmware update for any model year.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. You may very well be right. I was sure that I saw some guys going back and forth on one thread about the FW improvements from Version 8 and up. I'll keep digging and if I can find something I will post it. Thanks again.

I updated from V7 to V9, and noticed that it took a long time to update using this version. Maybe because it's only 1 DVD instead of 2 ?? It did not affect the MP3 playability like I was led to believe.
It does have updated streets and new POI"s compared to my V7.
I started with V2 on my 2006.
I use the GM NAV, and I prefer it above the Garmin or TOM TOM.
The graphics are weak, but the system is very powerful.

When I installed this single DVD (going from V4 to this new V9) it seemed to happen TOO quickly, which is what concerned me. It all seems to be working okay but i was disappointed that it still does not have a 5 mile road that was completed 3 years ago in my area yet this road shows up on every other GPS system and device I own. I searched high and low but still cannot find a reference to any FW updates since the one that allowed for MP3 playback fix from '05 despite what a couple of people have suggested here and there.

The discs contain data that the system references...they do not contain firmware updates. The update for '05 units, as stated above, was to change the firmware to allow reading MP3 files on a data CD...it had nothing to do with the NAV system and the DVD drive. This firmware update had to be done on its' own disc by itself, not on the NAV disc. The biggest change from year to year is the addition of more POIs, which are basically advertising. I always get a kick when people buy a new disc and say that their own street is not on the disc. Who cares about the street where you live???? You already know how to get there.

Because we travel all over the USA in our car, I have been buying a new nav disc each year.
Sometimes when I insert the new disc, the system recognizes it immediately and displays the map within seconds. Other times, it takes up to a minute, or I may even have to eject the disc and reinsert. The same thing happens on those rare occasions when I eject and reinsert the existing disc, it seems to be random.

Based on my experience, I can't make any correlation between "speed of loading" and possible software/firmware updates.
Since 2006, the only change in system operation I have noticed is that the tendency for the system to take us off the Interstate on an Exit ramp and then right back on with the adjacent On ramp, has mostly disappeared. I don't know if that's a software/firmware change, or just better map data.

We too have noticed the issue of "new" roads not showing up on the yearly discs as quickly as they should. But the same thing seems to happen with the two different non-GM systems we have in our other cars. Of course, paper maps tend to be even worse because they usually don't show the smaller roads and only get updated every 5 years or so.
