Default Fob

Hello people !

Only one FOB came with the car when i bought it last year (2008 LS3, coupe). To start the new season, i'll buy another one. I did a couple of search, but nothing that answers my specific question.

How can i know if the one i have is the #1 or the #2 FOB ? In order to buy the right one, i want to make sure the one i have is the other.

Thanks

Marc

In order to have a #1 & #2 FOB, you will need to do the long form on this link:

>>C6 Fob Programming and Glove Box Slot Testing Procedures<<

The first put in during the process becomes #1, the next is #2. The car is probably coded to 2 FOBs already and you need to start with a clean slate to have the "memory" function of the FOBs

Doesn't really matter what number you have or what number is stamped on it or what number you buy (1 or 2).

Every C6 comes from the factory with 2 FOB's, #1 and #2. ONLY the #1 and #2, the first 2 FOB's programmed to the car, can access the memory functions associated with your 3LT. The car's system will accept up to 4 FOB's total at any one time.

If you buy a new FOB and just add it to the car, it will be either #3 or #4 depending on how many are already programmed. Consider this, someone out there has one of the original FOB's that came with the car, because you only received one. That means there is the possibility, though remote, that your car is vulnerable to theft via that missing FOB.

So, when you buy the new FOB, you need to program the new one AND reprogram your existing one and I assume you want both to have access to the memory settings. You will need to either have a dealer program both for you, for some FEE, or do it yourself using the LONG programming procedure that erases ALL existing FOB's and starts over fresh. In that case, what becomes FOB #1 is the first one you program regardless of the number stamped on it, what becomes FOB #2 is the second one you program regardless of the number stamped on it.

Here are the programming procedures proven to work:

Thanks folks....

Looks like a long shot ( or maybe it looks like it's going to take a couple of hours, but probably not !), but, i'll do just that. Seems more cautious.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Marc

What hasn't been mentioned is that there are 2 different fob numbers associated with each fob. There is the physical fob number which is engraved somewhere on the fob. In order for you to be able to tell the two fobs apart after you have the 2nd one, you need to get a fob that has a different fob number engraved on it than the one you've got.

Then reprogram both fobs using the long procedure that deprograms all other fobs that you don't have. It will also allow you to program the #1 fob that you have as no. 1 and the #2 fob as no. 2. That way the engraved number will agree with the programmed number.

In case you don't know, they're not cheap, like $400 from the dealer and the bottom part (key) doesn't come with the fob when ordering, shop around on the forum.

From GMPartshouse (forum dealer)

2008 Key & Key Fob Upgrade

08fob1 - #1 Key FOB – $104.40
08fob2 - #2 Key FOB – $104.40

There seems to be confusion as far as what the FOB comes with. As you can see in the picture below you have the black part of the FOB and then the silver part. The silver part of the FOB is actually the key and it DOES NOT come with the FOB!

25995382 – 2008 Key (Does not come with FOB) – $44.82

I got my extra FOB on eBay, with a blank key for less than $100. ($4 for cutting the key) Got a spare FOB (key doesn't fit my car) for $40.

The long procedure only takes about a half hour total. It is well worth the time and effort. I did find that I had to take all of my FOBs outside, so the car couldn't "see" any of them when I started the procedure.

Or just get different colored sleeves.

Yes, make sure you get an integral key. And after you get it cut, make sure it works.

You can also get extra keys made for under $10. Use key blank B-106 (same as a Saturn). I keep one in my wallet.

I just purchased a new # 1 FOB (for my '08 coupe) from Kevin Cassimore at PartsTaxi (Forum Vendor) for $98.72. I also purchased the key (sold separately) for $42.14. Total for both: $140.86. The local Chevy dealer cut the new key for me at no charge. GM part number for the FOB: 25926479 (that's the part no. for FOB stamped #1). The part no. for the key: 25995382.
