Some track day organizations may not allow M helmets to be used for HPDE's.

Here's an excerpt from the Nat'l Corvette Museum Participant's Package for the event at VIR the end of June:

12) Helmets: Helmets with a minimum Snell SA 2005 rating are required, open or close face is your choice. DOT rated helmets are not acceptable and will not be permitted. If you are not sure of your helmet rating, call or email us for assistance but we will only accept current Snell ratings for our events.

Here's info from Hooked On Driving about helmets for their events (I believe the reference to SA specs is now "SA2005 or SA2010" since new Snell certification was done in 2010):

Can I wear my motorcycle helmet?

No. HOD requires auto racing helmets, with a Snell Foundation SA2000, or SA2005 rating. To find the Snell sticker, look under the foam inside the back of the helmet. If it says M, it is a motorcycle helmet. A DOT rating does not qualify. This is done out of concern for safety of our drivers and guests (any passengers included). SA rated helmets have outer shells, inner foam, and linings made specific for use in an automobile. Also, if you are driving an open car such as a Boxster, you will be required to have some form of eye protection, so an enclosed helmet with a visor is highly recommended. HOD locations will endeavor to make rentals or loaners available, but if you need an SA rated helmet, it is your responsibility to check for their availability at your event, and if not, to purchase or source one otherwise.

Some organizations may allow M helmets for AutoX, and maybe even for HPDE road course events, but almost all club racing will require an SA rated helmet - probably full-face.

So....check in advance for what the outfit sponsoring your next track day event requires so you don't lose track time (and registration fees!) due to not having an acceptable helmet.

This thread started out asking about HANS. Due to the necessity for a harness system in order to use a HANS device, make sure your harness system is acceptable before showing up for tech inspection and finding out it doesn't meet requirements.

Here is an excerpt from the NCM info about running a harness at their events (and I think it's pretty standard for PCA, BMWCCA, etc.):

14) Harnesses – Restraints must be the same for driver and passenger. The stock 3-point seatbelt is perfectly fine for this event. If a person chooses to put in a “race harness” they must do so for both seats. A driver cannot use a harness unless there is an equal one for the passenger. Race harnesses must pass through the seat and not around it and be installed as per manufacturers guidelines. Installation accuracy is the responsibility of the student.
Note that most organizations have a "similar restraint" requirement - i.e., if you have a race seat and harness, you need one on the passenger side as well if you'll be carrying anybody over there (instructor, coach, observer, passenger, etc.)

Also, many organizations require harness shoulder straps to pass through holes in the seat.

Just passing on info to keep you from showing up at the track for your next event and not being able to run - check your sponsoring organization's requirements before heading to the track for the event!!
