I just found a screw near the sidewall of my right rear new Goodyear F-1 Eagle EMT. I live on Oahu, Hawaii. Goodyear declined to patch or plug it and informed me there are no tires like mine in stock in the entire state!
What is a decent alternative brand? Do I need 2 or just 1. Can get a used one? EMTs are very expensive. Aloha

I had a screw in the threads of one of my tires, and got it plugged. I had no issues and ran on it for a year. Near the sidewall is another story. You may get a local shop that may patch it, and it may be fine to run for awhile. The GY Supercar tires suck anyway, so any other brand will be an improvement for road noise and everyday handling.
Firestone Wide Ovals, Michelin PS2's, Nitto Invos are the most popular.
If you go with a different tire, then replace 2.

Don't know anyone that will repair a side wall from a puncture. It's dangerous. If it was just an ordinary sedan just replace one in your case you should replace both. Michelin Pilot IMO is the better choice.

Even though you might not have a choice on where to get your tires look at Tire Rack. They have all the tires for your vehicle. Just fill in the blanks and you will see all the tires for your vehicle and you can judge from there.

If it were my DD (not a track/auto crosser) I would look for a "reputable" tire shop. Ask them if they will patch it, plug it, slime it, whatever. Then have them take the screw out. It might not even have punctured the tire.
And, just fast can you go on Oahu...nah, never mind that.
Good luck.

I'm going to disagree with the comment the supercar tires are crap. For a run flat tire they are not that bad of a handling tire, I track my car and have many hours experience with the GY Supercars and the Michelin Pilot Sports PS2's (not the all season AS's). The Michelins are a better tire but they are also more expensive. I have been hearing good things about the Bridgestones too, so that might be an alternative.

If you change brands, you will be well advised to replace all 4 tires. You need equal traction in all 4 corners for any car, not just these awesome Corvettes.

It appears the least expensive way out for you is to order another GY EMT and be patient until it comes in.

The other question though is you said "near the sidewall", so how near is near and how big is the screw and did the screw go straight in and penetrate the tire or is it stuck in the rubber? Pictures would help. Like someone else said, a patch just might do the trick for you especially if you are not going to track the car. I have been to Oahu several times now and don't recall seeing any race tracks on the island and traffic can be pretty thick at times.

Thanks guys!
Hard to determine screw length, but it is in the tread about 3/4" away from sidewall edge. Goodyear advised leaving it in. Bad roads here. I have AAA to tow if needed. Don't know if I should attempt to have plug/patch while awaiting shipppment. Cant afford 4 new tires. Must order, prob from Tirerack again.

Given the description of the location of the screw, any reputable shop will answer, "No. Sorry. We can't fix that."

A weasel shop (most) will give you the exact same answer for a tire that CAN be plugged as they want to sell you at least one new tire. I've had supposedly reputable and knowledgeable tire shops want to argue with me about the repair of the Goodyear run flats and have had to actually make them call Goodyear for an education

[Btw, Goodyear says that to repair an EMT the tire needs to be BOTH plugged AND patched.]

I agree with mikeCsix - the simplest and cheapest out seems be a Tire Rack replacement for what you have now. This assumes that the tire on the other side is relatively new, of course, as you don't want them to be too uneven side-to-side OR front-to-back. Given the amount of rain in Hawaii, I'd want good tires on the car.

Corvette tires are not cheap no matter how you slice it. Part of the deal, unfortunately.

I would check another dealer. 3/4 in within the tread should be within limits. I had one in each rear about the same location this week and they were removed, plugged and patched.

Don't forget the first 12 months or 12,000 miles Goodyear tire warranty if you bought the car new.

Just to clarify a bit, the problem with patching the tire without plugging it first is water will mighate into the steel belts and eventually weaken them. So you would have tp plug and patch the tire in order to maintain integrity of the belts. The other problem is with a repaired tire, you can't know when or if the integrity of the tire has been compromised. Since these cars a so capable of attaining very high speeds, tire integrity becomes paramount, not to mention liability issues associated with a repaired tire should it fail. Wolfdogs is one of the experts on tires on the forum and what he is saying is don't compromise the integrity of your tires. Its a false economy. Thinking about it another way, you have a 60k dollar sports car carrying a precious cargo, why skimp on tires?

I used Dyna Plug on my front tire and successfully drove it for 6 months before I switched all 4 tires over to Continental Extreme DWS which I am very satisfied with and the price can't be beat.

God must love Corvettes! I took a chance and had the screw pulled in preparation of plug/patch....it was only a 3/4" self capping sheet metal screw. No puncture! YAY thanks for all the helpful info.

You are a tire guy and I appreciate that. But for a lotta folks a patch on a DD will work. What it does to the integrity of the tire is something else. But local driving...

Ken...no offense taken, but I knew I was getting rid of the tires, and didn't run the car much that year I had it plugged...especially at high speeds....and I wasn't too worried since run craps can operate with no air, and the TMPS would let me know that. I certainly wasn't buying just 1 GY Supercar tire to replace the one with the patch, since I was going with a new brand.
The way the GY tires acted in the rain, they were way more dangerous to drive on, that the tire with the plug in it.
With the threads 50% worn, the GY runflats hydroplaned like crazy, above 50mph.

I had this happen too... Good news was no ire repair needed. Bad news was the big gouge the GY store put in the wheel while removing the tire...

Glad to hear no puncture!
