Default Reply to old thread

Hi,

I am new to this forum.

I thought people were encouraged to reply to threads that already exist rather than start a new one.

What is wrong with posting a reply to a thread that is old?

Are there space concerns with issues related to having too many threads?

If someone could link me to posting rules I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

I've never understood the reasoning behind the policy; your best bet is to send a PM to a moderator and I'm sure they'll provide you with the answer you're looking for. Here's the complete verbiage of the rule that you asked about:

If an existing thread has not received a reply for a period of 45 days or more, members should create a new thread which is identical or similar in nature, rather than to post to the existing one.

Similar or identical threads created under 45 days will be considered a dupe, and will be locked accordingly.

This rule will not apply to technical discussions or to posts in threads where such posts have been made to update the threads with information deemed by moderators to be of benefit to Forum members.

Also, here's a link to the complete set of forum rules:

oh, I found the rules.

I apologize for my actions.

I am having a very difficult time searching and having results match what I am searching for.

The search function is aweful. Try going to google and doing an advanced search, you can specify that you want results from this domain. Soooo much easier and faster IMO.

I've never understood it either. When someone does start a new thread about an old topic they get flamed for not doing a search. If the old information is still valid (like "what color interior should I get with my new blah, blah blue coupe?") why not use that old thread?

If you had bothered to click on the link that the moderator posted as the last post in that thread, you would have found yourself looking at the forum rule that says if a thread is more than 45 days old, post a new one instead.

Now, if you'll click on the last link in this thread, you'll find yourself looking at this rule:

If you have suggestions for the improvement of the Forum, questions or criticism of the Forum or its moderation, you are welcome to PM or e-mail a moderator. Please do not use an open thread for such messages, however.

That would include, but is not limited to discussions about who has been banned and why.

The work on the Forum's volunteer moderators is difficult enough without having folks calling them out in open threads.
